KENTUCKY FOOTBALL NEWS – 9/22/08

Will the current financial crisis slow the attempt by IMG to raise private capital to build a new basketball arena and an enhanced football stadium? The answer for now is no.

The Wildcats took advantage of their open week to shorten their wide receiver rotation in hopes of improving play at the position.

“At this stage, I’m not as pleased as I’d like to be,” said coach Rich Brooks. “We have to narrow the group down and judge by who’s stepping up and who isn’t.”

A handful of players, including E.J. Adams, Kyrus Lanxter, Eric Adeyemi, Matt Roark and Gene McCaskill have received additional reps in practice.

“It’s all about reps,” said senior receiver Dicky Lyons Jr. “That’s the best way to get better. The best way to learn a game is to get in the game. When they get in the game, I feel like they’re going to make some great plays.”

Ultimately, for the Wildcats to succeed in the SEC, Brooks said he’ll need two or three of the young receivers to step up. Lyons is convinced that they will.

Western Kentucky is fired up to play Kentucky for the first time in school history this Saturday.

“It’s definitely a big in-state rivalry, even though we haven’t played before,” said WKU linebacker Blake Boyd. “We’re already rivals because we’re in-state.”

I doubt the Wildcats feel the same way, but it’s all good.
