OLE MISS FOOTBALL NEWS – 9/30/08

Ole Miss has South Carolina on the schedule next, but you’ll have to forgive them for savoring last weekend’s victory over Florida for an extra day or so.

After going winless in the league last year, that win was a long time coming.  And the Rebels need to learn how to celebrate.

Houston Nutt had his nose bloodied
when he was hit with the Gatorade bucket, not just the Gatorade in the traditional (tired, boring, lame) post-game sideline shower.

“They’ve got to get better at that,” Nutt joked.  “I hope they get a lot of practice.”

By yesterday afternoon, Nutt’s team sounded ready to get back to work.  “I think it’s about time for us to move on, just like we did after losses,” said quarterback Jevan Snead.

“They haven’t been here,” Nutt said.  “From this time last week, asking about our attitude, and lack of enthusiasm and if everybody was down after Vandy, now it’ the flipside of it.  That’s why you’ve got to be very steady and go back to work.”

You’ll find in this notes column word that UM’s victory over Florida has already helped Nutt’s staff on the recruiting front.  “We got more calls Sunday night, (recruits) calling us, than we’ve had since we’ve been here.  We got a lot of Florida calls this past weekend from Florida athletes.”

Ole Miss gave up 450 yards of offense to the Gators, but their defense still benefitted from having defensive end and sack specialist Greg Hardy back in action.

“That dude’s a freak,” said receiver Shay Hodge.  “You could tell our whole team changed when he stepped on that field.”

Maurice Miller didn’t start at right guard against Florida because he overslept last Friday and was late for the team’s departure.

One last note from Oxford — Patrick Trahan has earned a starting linebacker position.
