Around The SEC East – 1/20/09

Here are the top headlines and links from the East Division this morning:

UF:  The fourth-down, goalline stop made by Torrey Davis in the BCS title game was the culmination of a long road back from suspensions and academic troubles.

UF:  Back in the Top 25 for the first time in a year, Gator b’ballers don’t want to repeat last year’s second-half dive.

UGA:  The NFL has granted 46 players special eligibility into their April draft.  Only Ohio State and South Carolina lost as many underclassmen as Georgia — three.

UK:  When Kentucky travels to Auburn tomorrow night, it will be a matchup of the league’s best and worst free throw shooting teams.  Guess which is which.  Yep.  You’re right.

UK:  Patrick Patterson’s shooting is being hurt by two fingers he sprained in practice.

USC:  Ron Morris of The State compares South Carolina’s Colonial Life Arena to Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum.  Advantage: Clemson.

USC:  It was announced yesterday that Steve Spurrier had hired Miami of Ohio’s Jay Graham as his new running backs coach.  But the reboot of Spurrier’s staff might not be complete just yet.  Special teams and tight ends coach Ray Rychleski is a candidate for a job with the Indianapolis Colts.  Carolina has already replaced five of their nine assistants this off-season.

UT:  The last time Tennessee visited Memorial Coliseum in Nashville they were #1 in the nation.  They lost.  Tonight they enter the arena out of the national rankings for the first time in nearly two years.

UT:  For a team still looking to find its long-range shooting touch, a game at Vandy isn’t a good thing.

Vandy:  Commodore fans will be decked out in white trying to re-create the “white-out” environment that accompanied VU’s upset of Tennessee last year.

Vandy:  This year’s battle with the Vols doens’t have the national hype of last year’s game.  It doesn’t have the star-power of last year’s game.  But it does have big implications in the SEC East.
