Is Saban Cheatin’ In Memphis?

What is it about Alabama football and Memphis? Talk about your Waterloos. Bad things seem to happen when the Tide starts recruiting well around Mud Island.
Ron Higgins of The Memphis Commercial-Appeal suggests that Nick Saban was engaging in “full-contact recruiting” with Memphis receiver Keiwone Malone during a dead-period prior to national signing day.
Malone’s high school coach said Saban followed the rules and only briefly spoke to Malone when the two bumped into each other (Saban was visiting with the coach). The coach says, “They didn’t really talk. (Saban) said, ‘Hey, how you doing?’ and ‘I can’t talk to him right now.’”
According to the young man’s account, “I had on my Dolphins hat, and he liked my favorite team, so we kind of bonded a little bit. And when he started talking to me, I started liking the stuff that he was saying.”
Uh-oh, right? Wrong. Why wrong? ‘Cause the contact didn’t come during a recruiting dead period as suggested by The Commercial-Appeal.
Malone is a junior and coaches are allowed to be on the road during late January.
According to sources, Malone did not receive a scholarship offer during the “bump” and did not commit to Alabama. He did that with a phone call the day after signing day.
Let’s see if anything more comes of this one.
