Today is the day that UK girds itself for battle against the Creighton Bluejays of the Missouri Valley Conference. Ken will have much more on the Creighton matchup later today, but you may remember that it was Creighton coach Dana Altman who accepted the job at Arkansas, then decided he would be better off staying in Omaha than moving to Fayetteville, joining Bobby Cremins and Rick Majerus among the shortest stints as head coach in history. Coach for a day, in Altman’s case.
And now, the news.
Kentucky Basketball News
- Gillispie loves it at Kentucky, according to this AP article discussing his news conference yesterday (which notably produced no news). He did make one interesting comment, though: “Experience is the best teacher,” Gillispie said.
Words to live by. Jerry Tipton has more on his blog.
- Gillispie twisting in the wind has caused Alabama fans some serious angst. I’d like to personally apologize to all 100 Tide basketball fans on behalf of the Big Blue Nation. (Just kidding, guys & gals — I know there are at least 1000). John Clay has more on his blog.
- The media is nearly unanimous in thinking Gillispie is on his way out. Perhaps that’s why I’m so skeptical — “groupthink” is what we are seeing here, in my opinion.
- The Omaha Wolrld-Herald on Kentucky: “As good as Meeks and Patterson are, they weren’t good enough to get Kentucky to the NCAA tournament for the 18th straight season.” Ouch. Feel the love.
- The Kentucky Kernel: “When Gillispie accepted the job at UK, not much was made of his sarcastic demeanor, especially in dealing with the media. After Gillispie left Texas A&M for the Cats, Bryan-College Station (Texas) Eagle sports writer Richard Croome called Gillispie “sort of a poor man’s Bobby Knight in that sense.”
Indeed. As I have noted, we have seen nothing out of Gillispie that he didn’t bring with him from College Station.
- Danny Jett would not want to trade places with Mitch Barnhart right now. I say that Barnhart made his own bed on this one.
- Straitpinkie previews the game against Creighton tonight.
- Gillispie thinks that Jodie Meeks wilted a bit under the stress of having to do too much late in the season. I think there is something to that.
- Creighton is deep on the bench and accurate from deep. A tough combination.
- More media unanimity on Gillispie’s future.
- How do you like this headline “UK’s Gillispie Says Job is Safe.” Then, you read the article and find nothing like that. Great bit of reporting, that.
