Pauly, Bulldogs Set To Take On Washington Sunday At WCWS

The most surprising part of Georgia's offensive onslaught in a 7-5 victory over Michigan in the Women's College World Series was not the number of Bulldog home runs – a WCWS-record four – it was who hit one of them.

Softball Plays On, Baseball’s Season Ends

Alabama

You’re trailing the defending national champions by two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning… you’ve loaded the bases via a hit-batter and two walks… you have your four-time All-American, senior Brittany Rogers stepping to the plate. Ideal situation; right?
If you’re Patrick Murphy it’s the ideal situation to play a hunch and pinch hit [...]

NCAA baseball overview

Vanderbilt
Content provided by Save the Shield! A Vanderbilt sports blog.

As for the tournament as a whole, here are just some observations from the first two days. All the 1-seeds won on Friday, and all the winners’ bracket winners (what I think of as teams in the “catbird seat”*) are 1-seeds except:

  • 1 Texas and BC are involved in a 2021-inning epic.
  • Virginia leads 6 UCI
  • Arkansas beat 7 Oklahoma
  • Southern Miss beat (9) GT
  • Okla State beat (12) Clemson
  • South Carolina beat (13) ECU
  • K-State beat (14) Rice

Of course the national seeds in parenthesis aren’t official, but they’re the only way I can keep up with the super regional pairings.

As for that wild affair in Austin, I can’t say enough about what a great game that must be. Texas just went down in the top of the 21st. Their pitcher Austin Wood went 13 innings in relief (only to be replaced by another Austin – obviously Texans approach baby names as yet another opportunity to pay honor to Texas, or at least they all apparently harbor fondness for the capital). The real beneficiary must be Army, who eliminated Texas State today. It’s hard to think they have a shot at winning three straight versus Horns and Eagles, but this is the kind of handicap to the favorites that might make that possibility worth considering.

I was hoping to make a list of 4-seeds that are still alive, but it’s getting late and I want to get to sleep before they’re done at Disch-Falk. That look at MTSU’s and U of L’s pitching situations will just have to wait.

*A phrase that apparently is rooted in baseball, which must be why I feel like Mike Shannon when I use it.

IU 0-10 VU

Vanderbilt
Content provided by Save the Shield! A Vanderbilt sports blog.

As with yesterday I’m going to try to keep this short.

  • Hard to imagine today’s game could have gone better, really. Clearly we’re head and shoulders better than Indiana, and although I wish Big Ten baseball in general and IU specifically all the best, clearly the “right” team by a wide margin went home in 4th place.
  • Except for, you know, that pesky loss and having-to-win-three-more-games-in-two-days, we really couldn’t stand much better. We’ve barely used our bullpen, only Taylor Hill for an innining of mop-up today, so our staff’s in great shape. Hopefully Cotham can pitch like he did in Hoover and then we’ll go from there.
  • As for our opponents’ pitching staffs, I’ll try to put together some thoughts in a separate post. Availability of pitchers is so important in this format.
  • It’s been great seeing Will (GoDores2005) near his hometown. Before tonight’s game he made the case that we’d prefer to have to beat Louisville only once and MTSU twice to advance, rather than the way it’s turned out. I thought I agreed with him, but obviously it doesn’t matter now, and either way we have to beat good teams three times in two days.
  • It’s not at all unthinkable that we’d win the regional, but essentially anything from here is gravy. We were seeded 3rd and will finish 3rd at worst. Eliminating MTSU would make this a pretty successful NCAA, in my book.
