Please Bring Back The Old Steve Spurrier

Back in the 1990s, there was one coach who could be counted on to be the loudmouth at the SEC party — Steve Spurrier.

But that was back in the ’90s.

Last week Spurrier created a little stir when he went on an Alabama radio show and brought up Urban Meyer’s old comments about possibly leaving Florida for Notre Dame someday.

It was a classic Spurrier needle.  Not too offensive.  Just a little jab to help remind recruits that UF’s coach might not always be UF’s coach.

But when asked about that comment at a golf course earlier this week, the ol’ ballcoach dropped back and punted.

“I haven’t won enough games to banter with anybody right now.  So when you’re 7-5 and 7-6, which is about what we’ve averaged, you just try to worry about your team.”

I find that to be just a little bit sad, to tell you the truth.

Sort of like in the last “Star Wars” film when Darth Vader — finally in the black suit and full-on evil — asked “Where is Padme?  Is she alright?”

I mean it strips down all the armor, doesn’t it?

So I’ll go on the record right now… I’m pulling for Spurrier and Carolina in the East this year.

The league needs the old Spurrier.  Today’s coaches just seem a bit meaner in their barbs.  Spurrier would lob grenades with a smirk and a visor and even when they exploded they would still draw a bit of a laugh.

It wasn’t the “he cheated” or “we wouldn’t stoop to that type of recruiting” malarkey that we’re treated to now.

Come back, Steve.  The world needs a good villain.  Bring back Darth Visor.
