Secondary Violations, Schmeckendary Violations

When Tennessee’s new head coach Lane Kiffin committed a couple of secondary violations this spring it became big news around the SEC.

Kiffin had popped off about other schools and most writers saw an opportunity to gig UT’s Boy Wonder for his supposed lack of rulebook learnin’.

But now that Auburn has jumped into the secondary violation fray — and are making a splash on the recruiting scene because of them — writers are taking a different approach.

“What’s the big deal?” seems to be the new mantra.

Just yesterday, Georgia turned themselves in for three secondary violations.  In fact, just about every school commits them.

Ray Melick of The Birmingham News actually went to the SEC and the NCAA to try to get some straight answers on the importance of secondary violations.

He didn’t get any.

For now, at least, when it comes to secondary violations in the SEC… they’re an accepted part of the game.  (Always have been, always will be.)
