One-Liners For 7/15/09

As we crawl toward the start of SEC Media Days next week, here’s yet another all-in-one post featuring all of your SEC headlines in one place:

Let’s start with the big picture… Senator Orrin Hatch has penned an op-ed piece for ESPN.com explaining his belief that the BCS limits competition and that government intervention might be needed.  Uh, no, it’s not.

Tennessee’s receiving corps has seen Austin Rogers lost for the season, Denarius Moore lost for “a couple” of games, and Gerald Jones limited during fall camp.

Safety Eric Berry makes all the right moves off the field as well.

This UT notes column reveals that quarterback Nick Stephens has changed his throwing motion and added 15 pounds of muscle over the summer.

Vol D-lineman Wes Brown has undergone three knee surgeries since December.

UT’s players are buying into Aaron Ausmus, their third strength coach since this time last year.

Bruce Pearl led Team USA to a win in their first game at the World Maccabiah Games.

David Climer of The Tennessean writes that if Urban Meyer is staying at Florida, it’s bad news for the rest of the SEC.

Did some Tennessee and Kentucky football players really get into a brouhaha over the weekend in Lexington?

The University of Kentucky has won state approval to spend $100,000 on a Texas law firm to help them fight off former coach Billy Gillispie’s lawsuit.  So they’ve done gone and hired a bunch of Texas law men, huh?

As I’ve said before, we usually don’t cover the exploits of former SEC athletes… unless they’re really out there.  This seems to fit.  Former UK basketball player Antoine Walker has gone all Charles Barkley on Vegas and now faces an arrest warrant over $822,500 in gambling debts.

Walker is charged with three felony counts of writing bad checks.

Former UK football star Derrick Ramsey is going to interview for the job of South Alabama’s athletic director.

Georgia defensive end Rod Battle is hoping for a breakout senior year.

Mark Bradley of The AJC ranks Mark Richt, Les Miles, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer among the 10 best coaches in America.

New basketball coach Mark Fox has completed his first Georgia staff.

A member of Kentucky’s 1995-96 national championship team, Mark Pope, is one of Fox’s assistants.

Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes ranks #6 on The Gainesville Sun’s list fo the SEC’s top players.

It’s should be no shock that Florida is the preseason #1 pick of just about every magazine on the market.

Here’s The Sun’s season preview of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

While the national pundits sang Georgia’s praises last summer, the SEC media tabbed Florida as the league favorite.  Will the media get it right again this year?

Auburn is launching a billboard campaign to promote Tiger football in the state of Alabama.

Here’s a profile of incoming Arkansas freshman tight end Austin Tate.

Former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said yesterday that he was “really, really, really close” to taking the Arkansas job that eventually went to Bobby Petrino.  (You got the right guy, Hog fans.)

Sports Illustrated Curse, anyone?  Check out the photo up top and you’ll see Houston Nutt staring back at you from the cover of SI’s SEC Preview Special.

“The Reverand” Nutt was “in top form”
as he spoke before more than a thousand Rebel fans last night.

Defensive tackle Jerrell Powe winds up #12 on The Jackson Clarion-Ledger’s list of the most important Rebels for 2009.

Finally, Chris Low of ESPN imagines an actual All-Star Game in the SEC pitting the best of the East against the best of the West in football.

Kentucky football players would need a shotgun to have the courage to step to Tennessee football players. 23 years running of losing to the Big Orange indicates a serious lack of backbone in the Bluegrass, as it is. When virtually everybody in the conference, INCLUDING VANDERBILT & SOUTH CAROLINA (two moribund football programs if there ever were any), can sneak up on UT while we're down & steal a series win or two, there's Kensucky being Kensucky, unable to end the college football's longest streak.

I also find it intriguing that some UT players, as welcome & invited guests of a resident of the apartment complex in question, were acosted by Micah Johnson & whatever other Mildcat players accompanied him (since you know he didn't have the balls to show alone) showed up to start trouble. Real classy ...

Hey Micah, maybe you should bring a shotgun to Commonwealth Stadium next November when the Vols visit ... you're sure as hell not going to get a W without it!
