A Few Early Afternoon Notes

If LSU bounces back from a subpar 2008, it’ll be because of a big turnaround on defense.

Tommy Hicks of The Mobile Press-Register is tired of all the talk… he’s ready to see some action on the field.

Here are three newcomers who might have a big impact on Auburn’s season.

Here’s a preview of Auburn’s 2009 season.

And here’s Chris Low’s look at Arkansas’ impact newcomers.

Folks in Atlanta are going to be seeing some Tennessee billboards.  (Like the one at left.  Click the headline of the story to see a bigger photo.)

Tennessee officials wouldn’t be surprised if their billboards in Florida get graffiti’d up a bit.

Mark Richt is glad that his team cares more about the G on their helmets than the names on the back of their jerseys.  Anybody getting the felling the Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford might not have been the best “team” guys?

Alabama News – 7/31/09

Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops says he was in Tuscaloosa this week to visit with Nick Saban.  “Nick and I were just sharing ideas and working on some defensive stuff together.”  Could they have been talking about how to stop spread offenses?

We linked you to this story yesterday, but for you skimmers out there, I thought I’d point out on the homepage that Saban and his staff make more money than 32 FBS schools spend on their entire athletic departments.

Linebacker Rolando McClain is the rare athlete in today’s sports world who doesn’t “like to be in the eye of the media or the limelight.”

Saban has finalized the Tide’s practice schedule which kicks off next week.

Tide corner and ace return man Javier Arenas is getting national recognition for his “volunteerism and civic involvement.”

And new coach Anthony Grant hopes that by adding more student seats at  Coleman Coliseum the school will create a louder homecourt advantage.

Auburn News – 7/31/09

Are Auburn fans really worried about whether they (and their coach) should wear navy blue or orange to games this year?  I think I’d be more concerned with a bad quarterback situation and my coach’s track record.

The Montgomery Advertiser has started an Auburn Advisory Board (to go along with their Bama board) where die-hard Tiger fans answer questions put to them by the paper.  Everyone wants to be interactive.

Five Auburn signees are still waiting to be deemed eligible by the NCAA clearinghouse.

Florida News – 7/31/09

While the rest of the sports world is busy ramping up the Gators’ national title chances, Robbie Andreu of The Gainesville Sun tackles five issues that could deflate Florida’s high expectations.

Urban Meyer is opening the Gators’ first two days of practice to the public… but they’ll have to be on-hand between 6:10 and 8:00 am.

Sports Illustrated’s 2009 SEC preview features a series of regional covers.  In Florida, a shades-wearing Meyer stares back at you from the front cover.

Pat Dooley of The Sun reveals that Tim Tebow is nearsighted (gasp!) in his latest around-the-conference column.

Receiver David Nelson says it’s “kind of frustrating” when people judge the whole football team by the off-field legal woes of a few players.

As I’ve stated many times, recruiting news usually only makes the front page when it’s big time news.  The rest of the time it lands over on Josh Ward’s Recruiting Page.

But we’ll make an exception this time around simply because we like a recruit’s name.  It seems Florida is so thin at guard heading into 2009 that the Gators are eyeing 6-6 Israeli guard Nimrod Tishman.

I believe I speak for everyone when I say that I personally hope a man named Nimrod Tishman is playing in the SEC next year.

MSU News – 7/31/09

Mississippi State athletic director Greg Byrne is asking Bulldog fans to wear maroon shirts on Fridays this fall.  Wearing pants is optional.

MSU has a new stadium PA announcer for 2009.

Renardo Sidney’s attorney says that “if the young man is not certified, there is a realistic chance that this will be in a courtroom in Mississippi very soon.”  Great.

Ole Miss News – 7/31/09

Houston Nutt says freshman tight end Zaccheus Mason has been approved by the NCAA clearinghouse.

At 6-5, 250 pounds it can’t be said that Zaccheus is a wee, little man.  Or that a wee, little man is he.

As he prepares to go into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame tonight, how many fans around the SEC do you think know that former Ole Miss basketballer John Stroud is the league’s third all-time leading scorer?  I’ll guess not many.

    Kentucky News – 7/31/09

Rich Brooks told a Rotary Club this week that Randall Cobb “needs to have the ball in his hands a minimum of 15 times a game.”  (I think I’d go closer to 20, Coach.)

David Paschall of The Chattanooga Times Free Press previews the 2009 Wildcats right here.

Here’s a statistical anomaly, courtesy of The Lexington Herald-Leader’s John Clay: Did you know that Kentucky usually has a better record in years when they travel to Florida and Tennessee than in years when Florida and Tennessee visit Lexington?  Then again, UK hasn’t beaten Florida or Tennessee anywhere since 1986 and 1984, respectively.

In basketball news, three walk-ons have been walked off by John Calipari.
