ESPN Gets Meyer 911 Call From After SEC Title Game

Personally, I’m not a big fan of 911 calls being made public.  Not sure why.  Just seems a bit too voyeuristic for my tastes.  Why would folks want to hear someone else in distress?

That said, ESPN has gotten hold of the 911 call placed from Urban Meyer’s home at about 4:30am ET after the SEC Championship Game.  In other words, the 911 tape is now news.

Meyer — who we were told at the time had been treated for dehydration — was actually rushed by ambulance to the hospital after complaining of chest pains and a tingling sensation in his side.

This seems to contradict comments from Meyer and Florida officials that the coach had checked himself into the hospital.

Shelley Meyer said during the call that her husband awoke briefly that morning, tried to get out of bed, and fell to the floor.  She also said that while her husband had a pulse and was breathing, he would not wake up.

The coach had been taking Ambien which she said put him in a deep sleep.

If this sounds to you like something that a few rounds of golf and a fishing trip can cure, then I think you’re crazy.

Meyer has serious health issues stemming from stress.  The decision he reached with his family — to retire — seems more and more to have been much wiser than the decision he made with his team and Florida officials — to try a leave of absence and come back to the Gator sidelines next season.

As I’ve said before, here’s hoping that Meyer doesn’t suffer anything worse than chest pains and blackouts in the future.  If he does, the folks at Florida will stand to answer an awful lot of questions.

For one: Did his bosses care more about Meyer… or their football program?
