Report: Richt Has Spoken To Steele And Sunseri

According to the website FootballCoachScoop.com, Mark Richt has spoken to two new candidates regarding Georgia’s open defensive coordinator slot.

Alabama linebackers coach Sal Sunseri — who has been at Alabama for one year and has been among the names rumored to be on Richt’s list — has apparently been contacted officially about the job.

Also, a new name (but a familiar one to SEC fans) is in the mix… first-year Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.  Internet reports claim that Richt has already made contact with Steele, who is a South Carolina native.

Steele played at Tennessee, has coached at Tennessee (as well as at Nebraska and Florida State) and has served as the defensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban (2007, 2008) and at Clemson.  He was also Baylor’s head coach for four years.

Interestingly, Sunseri and Steele have both served as assistants with the Carolina Panthers, though not at the same time.

It is believed that Steele is making more than $360,000 at Clemson.

If Sunseri becomes the Dawgs’ choice, then it’s even more difficult to imagine defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner staying onboard to work for a man who served as a linebackers coach this past season.
