Afternoon Grab Bag

Sorry today has been just a link-fest.  Had to do some work in other media today.  That said, here are a few more stories from across the conference this afternoon:

1.  Nick Saban said today that linebacker Rolando McCain is feeling better and “should be able to participate” in the BCS title game tomorrow night.  There will still be questions about dehydration, however.  It’s not easy to bounce right back from a stomach virus.

2.  Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart did anything but close the door on the Georgia defensive coordinator job.  “I really haven’t talked to Mark much.  To say I said ‘no’ to Mark, he has not offered me anything.  That’s not really accurate.  To be honest, with this game coming up, I haven’t even thought about it.”  So will he be back in Tuscaloosa next fall?  “You don’t ever know what’s going to happen, but I certainly am excited about the opportunity to be back at Alabama.”  So does that mean Smart’s interested in the Georgia job… or that he’s interested in getting a raise from Alabama?

3.  One longtime coach says Arkansas will be getting a good assistant in Steve Caldwell.  Also, it appears that Central Florida’s David Kelly is the frontrunner for UA’s receivers coach position.

4.  Kentucky is holding an introductory press conference for newly promoted head coach Joker Phillips at 3:08pm ET.  Why 3:08?  To recognize the fact that Phillips wore #8 when he played for UK in the early ’80s.

5.  A columnist for The Austin American-Statesman has fired a few shots at Alabama in an attempt to be funny today.  The general point: “Texas maybe seriously out-rednecked” tomorrow.  Ha ha.
