Alabama Headlines – 1/5/10

Since the Crimson Tide is gearing up for the BCS Championship Game — and getting TONS of coverage in the process — we’re going to break their stuff out from the pack this week.

Here are the headlines ’bout Bama:

1.  Texas and Alabama have similar defensive roots.

2.  The Tide needs to score on its opening drive against the Longhorns.

3.  Even with diminished state, Julio Jones did his part in the Alabama offense…

4.  One reason Jones’ numbers were down was a bum knee.

5.  Here’s more on how the injury limited Jones from the season’s second week on.

6.  Mark Ingram will be a marked man against Texas’ top-ranked rush defense.

7.  It shouldn’t be a surprise that former UA coach (and Texas A&M player) Gene Stallings will be pulling for Bama against the Longhorns.

8.  If UA beats Texas, this writer believes Nick Saban should be called the coach of the decade in college football… not Urban Meyer.  (Agreed, no coach since 1936 has won national titles with two different schools.)

9.  Major Applewhite (now at Texas) and Jim McElwain both helped to shape Bama’s offense.

10.  It’s only a matter of time before McElwain lands a head coaching job.

11.  The Tide’s offensive coordinator says limiting turnovers was the key to Bama’s 13-0 season.

12.  McElwain says he’s enjoying his time as Alabama’s OC.

13.  Texas’ offensive line will have to step up against the Crimson Tide.

14.  Former Saban aide Will Muschamp is happy in his coach-in-waiting role in Austin.

15.  There are quite a few similarities between this year’s Alabama team and Saban’s 2003 national champion LSU squad.

16.  Over the last couple of days, one assistant coach after another has said that the horror stories about Saban aren’t true.

17.  Paul Finebaum of The Mobile Press-Register writes that Alabama is back on top… and actually seems to belong there.

18.  In basketball news, the Tide topped Toledo 67-50 on the road last night.
