SEC East Headlines – 1/12/10

1.  Interim coach Steve Addazio believes Urban Meyer — who hasn’t even left yet — will return “sooner rather than later.”

2.  Lou Holtz says of his friend Meyer: “I think as along as his health is okay — that’s the whole concern he has.  As long as that’s under control, I think he’ll be absolutely fine (in 2010).”

3.  When Florida hosts Kentucky tonight, the game within the game will be Kenny Boynton going against John Wall.

4.  Billy Donovan — who toiled in the NIT the last two years — would like to see the NCAA Tournament expanded.

5.  It’s being pointed out that Georgia might be suffering a talent drop since only one Bulldog senior has been invited to the NFL combine.  (Could that have something to do with the fact that nearly 20 Dawgs have left school early in recent years?  Nah.)

6.  Mark Bradley of The AJC writes that he isn’t always negative… in fact, he’s quite positive about the job Mark Fox is doing with his first UGA basketball team.

7.  The Junkyard Blawg wonders if Kirby Smart “played the odds correctly or blew his big chance.” (He’s got a better shot at landing a head coaching job by staying at Bama and riding their success.)

8.  A Lexington-native is transferring from Minnesota’s football team back to Kentucky.

9.  John Calipari is doling out minutes based on toughness.

10.  Coach Cal doesn’t like the fact that his squad builds early leads only to squander them.  (They’re still 16-0.)

11.  UK has lost eight of its last 10 games against Florida.

12.  UF’s Donovan has nothing but good things to say about the Wildcats.

13.  Don’t tell Calipari that forward Daniel Orton says the Cats “might play better on the road.”

14.  Kentucky’s #2 national ranking is its high-water mark since the 2003-2004 season.

15.  Folks all over the Bluegrass State are copying the “John Wall Dance.”

16.  Alabama may be next year’s preseason #1, but South Carolina figures to be in the Top 25.

17.  This Knoxville writer doesn’t believe Lane Kiffin is on USC’s wish list to replace Pete Carroll.  (We wrote the same on Saturday.)

18.  But this Gainesville writer believes Kiffin COULD wind up at Southern Cal.

19.  Yesterday, Calipari and the rest of the league’s coaches were still talking about UT’s upset of Kansas.

20.  UT used a collapsing man-to-man defense to contain KU’s Sherron Collins.

21.  Tennessee’s basketball program was back in the news for all the right reasons on Sunday night and Monday.

22.  Meanwhile, Bruce Pearl says the three players still suspended for their New Year’s Day arrests are unlikely to play Thursday against Auburn.

23.  Pearl is also stressing caution.  “The margin for error for for us is still very small.  We withstood foul trouble last night, but there’s not much margin for foul trouble or injury.”

24.  How long can Tennessee continue to get by on grit, emotion and an undermanned line-up?

25.  Vanderbilt senior safety Ryan Hamilton has been denied a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.  Hamilton missed 10 games this past season with a torn pectoral muscle.

26.  Shooting guard John Jenkins has been named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week.  He has hit a blistering 59.4% of his three-pointers in the ‘Dores last six games.

27.  It’s the second straight week that Jenkins has won that honor.
