Florida coach Urban Meyer and wife Shelley flew safely into Atlanta early Sunday morning after a Tsunami scare in Hawaii caused them to evacuate their hotel, Shelley told the Sentinel in a text message.

Meyer and his wife were on vacation in Hawaii this week and successfully flew out late Saturday. A major earthquake in Chile caused a rippling effect in the Pacific that placed Hawaii on emergency alert.

“Just landed in atl! Got evacuated to higher ground early yesterday,” Shelley said. “Turned out to be a dud Tsunami. Thank goodness.”

URBANMADMeyer can’t seem to avoid stress after his job as Gators coach called him to take a leave of absence. Meyer has been taking vacations recently to make up for lost time before spring practice starts March 17. He also visited his daughter, Nicki, a Georgia Tech student, in Atlanta in mid February.

Meyer has said he expects to return for spring practices.

At least Meyer returns to Gainesville with a nice bonus from the University of Florida. Under Meyer’s most current contract extension on file that he signed in 2007, the school must pay him a $500,000 retention bonus by Feb. 28, 2010.

Meyer received a six-year, $24-million extension over the summer, but Meyer has yet to sign that deal and is operating under his old contract worth $3.25 million per year. Meyer still gets paid the $4 million per year, even without a contract.
