Bama To The White House Monday

Alabama’s national championship team will be in Washington, DC on Monday for the traditional handshake/jersey-exchange with President Barack Obama.

In addition to meeting with the President and seeing the sights in DC, the Tide players will also meet with a group of area youths and encourage them to stay in school.

When Obama called Nick Saban after Alabama’s win over Texas in the BCS title game, Saban reportedly invited him to play in some coach-vs-coach basketball games that he and his staff will be holding this spring.

That’s a far cry from Saban’s snub of President George W. Bush while serving as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.  In the summer of 2006, Saban declined a Miami dinner invitation from the then-President in order to take care of his training camp duties.

“It was really a tough decision.  I feel like my first responsibility is our team.  That in no way disrespects the importance of the opportunity I would have loved to have had to spend dinner with the President.”

Either a) Saban has learned what kind of bad press a man can get from snubbing the prez or b) this is actually a team reward, so he has no problem making time for it.

Or c) he felt that Bush was doofus.

I’ll go with b.
