SEC West Headlines – 3/10/10

1.  NFL scouts are in Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s Pro Day.

2.  Cornerback Walt McFadden ran a lightning fast 40-yard dash at Auburn’s Pro Day yesterday.

3.  Gabe McKenzie had a surprisingly good day in front of the scouts, too.

4.  Ben Tate focused on showing scouts that he could catch the ball out of the backfield.

5.  Arkansas AD Jeff Long says his support for John Pelphrey “has not changed” since the beginning of the season.

6.  Freshman Marshawn Powell drew “wows” from the press by saying that he’s going to step up as the team leader because “we haven’t had that all year.”

7.  Powell: “I believe this is my team.  I’m taking it and putting it on my back.”

8.  This isn’t the first time Powell has spoken up during his freshman year.

9.  Les Miles believes forcing Terrance Toliver to practice with a broken hand is a good punishment.

10.  Miles also said of his senior, “It’s interesting that a guy who is a pretty good egg, a good student, and does the right things can make mistakes.”

11.  Trent Johnson prefers man-to-man defense, but a 2-3 zone has been working better for his Tigers.

12.  Andy Kennedy has reinstated Eniel Polynice to the Ole Miss team after a one game suspension, but he’s not sure if he’ll play in the SEC tourney on Friday.  (With an NCAA bid possibly on the line, I’d be awfully impressed/surprised if the coach kept Polynice on the bench.)

13.  The team’s assist leader will have to do a bit more work to earn some playing time.

14.  Who’s more deserving of an NCAA tournament bid: Ole Miss or Mississippi State?

15.  Jarvis Varnado said of his Defensive Player of the Year award: “The SEC is full of great players, and to be mentioned with those guys is humbling.”

16.  The last few years, State has been better against good teams in the SEC tourney than they have against good teams during the regular season.

17.  Some good news to close with — Brad Locke of The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal is back at work (with new perspective) following a car accident last month.
