Future is cloudy for expansion

Thirteen years ago, when the ACC was mulling expansion, then-N.C. State athletics director Les Robinson was assigned a cloak-and-dagger task: Call South Carolina and see if it was interested in coming back.
USC athletics director Mike McGee politely but firmly told Robinson that his school was happy in the SEC. Robinson said thank you, hung up, and that was that.
“No one ever knew about it,” said Robinson, now retired and living in Charleston.
Robinson suspects that plenty of similar discreet conversations are going on right now across the country, perhaps even at Clemson. But this time, those talks are more serious as potential seismic changes loom.
