“A Good Chance” Masoli Will Land In Oxford

According to David Brandt of The Jackson Clarion-Ledger, there’s “a good chance” that dismissed Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli will eventually join the Ole Miss football team.

However, Houston Nutt said via text last night that the deal still isn’t done.  UM officials are looking into Masoli’s background… which includes charges and/or citations for burglary (he was stealing laptops from a frat house) and pot possession (as well as driving on a suspended license).

Masoli reportedly had a juvenile record, too, but those records have been closed.  Still, a 2009 report in The Eugene Register-Guard claimed that Masolia had been involved in robberies dating back to 2005.

The electrifying player passed for 3,891 yards and 28 touchdowns in his two years at Oregon.  He also rushed for 1,386 yards and scored 23 touchdowns.

Whether he can pick up the offense completely or not, it’s easy to imagine Nutt and company creating a simplified version of Dexter McCluster’s old “Wild Rebel” package for him.  And this time, the guy behind center would be real passing threat.

We’ve all seen what Nutt could do with Darren McFadden and McCluster.  Now imagine what he could do with this, even with limited practice early on:

Parrish Alford of The Northeast Mississippi Journal reports that Nutt indicated to him (via text) that the entire process could take up to seven days to play out.

Nutt is also — at the very least — being honest about the situation he faces following the surprising transfer of quarterback Raymond Cotton.  According to Alford, Nutt said that he is “always” concerned about the criticism he and UM might receive by signing Masoli, but that he is also concerned about “criticism I might receive if something happens, and I don’t have a QB to finish the year.”

Sounds like something you might have read here yesterday afternoon.
