Can Evans Survive At Georgia?

What kind of equity has Damon Evans built up at Georgia?
That’s the question that will be answered at his press conference this evening. If Evans keeps his job and vows to earn Georgia fans’ trust again, we’ll know that he had plenty of goodwill chips stashed in his pocket. If he resigns, we’ll know that some of Georgia’s most powerful boosters, donors and trustees refused to back the guy in this embarrassing mess.
Evans has been one of the SEC’s most high-profile ADs since taking over the job in 2004. He likes to talk and he’s given some pretty good quotes over the years. Are UGA backers good with that?
Evans recently expressed his disappointment in Georgia’s 2009-2010 performance in the national all-sports race. The Bulldogs finished 20th in the standings, their worst showing since 1997. Does a disappointing season undermine Evans?
Georgia’s AD is also scheduled to make $550,000 this year and that includes a $110,000 raise which kicked in today, ironically enough. Will his large salary work against him?
And, of course, just who was the 28-year-old woman in his car last night and what was she doing there? In reality, that’s none of our business. But most Americans tend to decide for themselves what IS their business. So if there isn’t a good explanation for what Courtney Fuhrmann was doing in the car, that too could work against Evans.
Either Evans has got some key donors/trustees supporting him with president Michael Adams right now… or he’s got key donors/trustees washing their hands of him.
We’ll know which sometime after 6:30 tonight.
