Cats have poor Thursday practice

Kentucky
Content provided by Chip Cosby on UK football.

UK Coach Joker Phillips was not pleased with the Wildcats’ practice session on Thursday. He said the team has not been sharp when regulars line up and face the scout team, who simulates the offensive and defensive packages of the opponent.

“If we play like we practice today, it will be ugly,” Phillips said. “Everything should be clean. All the assignments should be cleaned up. We can’t practice against each other everyday. Physically you can’t do it. And there are things we need to see that our opponents are doing. When we practice against the scouts, we can’t bring our level of play down to the scouts. We didn’t execute a lot of little things, and the little things are what you get beat on the road. We practiced to get our tails beat today.”

But Phillips said there’s still time for the team to recover and deliver a good performance against Ole Miss. Phillips said he hoped the players would spend some time looking at film on their own Thursday, and team will also have a walk-through on Friday.

“The good thing is we’ve got time,” he said.

Junior receiver Randall Cobb said that a poor practice doesn’t necessarily mean that the team will perform poorly against Ole Miss. The Wildcats had a good Thursday practice before a 48-14 blowout loss at Florida.

“It wasn’t where it need to be, but there’s nothing we do about it now but get in the film room, get some rest and get ready for the game Saturday,” Cobb said.

Bad News For Richt: Speculation Begins About Replacements

Once a coach loses his fanbase to a certain point, there’s no getting it back.  Once the talkshow crowd and messageboarders state that a man’s got to go, they have to stick to their guns — no matter what — or else they’re basically admitting that they were wrong in the first place.

How many times have you seen/heard someone admit they were wrong on a radio call-in show or internet messageboard?  Exactly.

So it’s bad news for a coach when his school’s fans start wondering about who out there in the coaching universe could do a better job.  And that’s already happening for Richt.

I’ve read two names time and again on messageboards.  I’ve been asked about two names in several emails from Georgia fans.  “Do you think we can get him?”

Now those two names have been mentioned by Doug Segrest of The Birmingham News in an excellent column summarizing the Richt situation.

“Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and Texas’ Will Muschamp are UGA grads.  Does the program need new blood with old bloodlines?”

Yep.

Those are the two names that seem to be popping up most often.  And the more they pop up the hotter the seat gets for Richt.  Smart and Muschamp don’t have one combined win in the college ranks, but they also don’t have any losses for fans to nitpick.  With each Georgia loss, the unknown becomes more alluring than the known for some Dawg fans.

Personally, I think Richt’s a keeper.  But I’ve got a bad feeling that Georgia fans are viewing a 20-game slump as though it were a 50-game trend.  That feeling grows every time I see the name Smart or Muschamp connected to Richt’s job.

Dareus Thinks Some Hogs Were A Little Dirty, Too

On Saturday, Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus was taken down from behind on a chop block by Arkansas center Wade Grayson during a Razorback screen pass.  No penalty was called.

According to Izzy Gould of The Birmingham News, Dareus wasn’t pleased with Grayson’s tactics, whether a flag was thrown or not.

“When he did that I looked at him like, ‘Are you trying to take me out of the game?  You already see I’m hurt (with an ankle injury from an earlier play).’  He just looked at me crazy like he didn’t care.  That’s how some players play.  It don’t really bother me it just shows the ignorance on some players when they see a person down and they still try to kick him when there’s no reason.”

Tailback Mark Ingram had already said earlier this week that some Hog players got “a little dirty” at the end of Alabama’s 24-20 win.

Just me, but I’m guessing that “dirty” isn’t the reputation that Bobby Petrino wants for his football team.
