Arkansas Moves to No. 18 in BCS

Arkansas
Content provided by The Slophouse.

Editor’s Note: Because of its implications on several postseason bowl selections, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette uses the Bowl Championship Series standings as its official rankings.

Arkansas moved up one spot to No. 18 in the Bowl Championship Series standings, released Sunday night.

The Razorbacks also moved up one spot to No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25, but fell one spot to No. 19 in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll. Arkansas beat Vanderbilt 49-14 Saturday night in Fayetteville.

Arkansas’ next opponent, South Carolina, is ranked No. 19 in the BCS following a 38-24 win over Tennessee. The Gamecocks currently lead the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division and could clinch the school’s first trip to the SEC Championship Game with a win and Florida loss next weekend.

For the third consecutive week the Razorbacks are one of five SEC schools ranked in the BCS standings, joined by Auburn (2), Alabama (6), LSU (10) and Mississippi State (20).

Week Nine BlogPoll Ballot: The Question Isn’t "Auburn or Oregon," It’s "Rhett or Scarlett"

Georgia
Content provided by Dawg Sports.

My SEC Power Poll ballot has been cast scrapped, so it is time to turn my attention to this week’s BlogPoll ballot. Yeah, Saturday stunk, but, as was pointed out in one of the comment threads, tomorrow is another day, so here goes:

You know what? It turns out I’m still not there yet. It turns out that I’m still in Rhett Butler “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” mode. This was the most gut-wrenching Georgia loss since the 2008 Alabama game.

When casting my BlogPoll ballot, I’m supposed to tell you what I watched. This week, I didn’t watch much. I cast disinterested glances at the Boise State-Louisiana Tech game on Tuesday night, I had the Florida State-N.C. State game on in the background with the sound muted while I transcribed the tape of my interview with Robbie Burns on Thursday night, and I killed time while waiting for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party to start by watching portions of the South Carolina-Tennessee game before watching the Georgia-Florida game. Once our game was over, I turned off the TV and I haven’t turned it back on since.

The bottom line remains the same. There’s absolutely no way the Bulldogs should have lost that game, and, until I come to grips with the fact that they did, I frankly don’t care about which 25 college football teams are the top 25 teams in Division I-A. All that really matters is the fact that Georgia isn’t one of them.

Don’t be surprised if this theme continues throughout the week.

Go ‘Dawgs!

Florida supports P/K Chas Henry when critics don’t

Florida punter-turned-kicker Chas Henry is in an unenviable position. A stress fracture in his back has kept kicker Caleb Sturgis out for a month, thrusting Henry into a position he hasn’t played since high school. And while Henry is one of the best punters in the country, the rust has shown in his kicking game.

Henry started well enough, making two field goals to account for all of Florida’s points in a 31-6 loss at Alabama in his first game at the position. He made another a week later against LSU.

But three misses in a row, including on in the final seconds against Mississippi State that would have tied the score, drew criticism coming into Saturday’s game against Georgia. Lee Corso even called for Henry to be replaced on ESPN’s College GameDay.

To be sure, the Gators are not in an ideal situation. As coach Urban Meyer said after the Georgia game, “He’s not majored in that.”

Without an adequate backup for Sturgis, who himself is 2-for-4 on field goals this season, Henry became the guy.

A missed field goal in the first quarter certainly didn’t prove critics wrong.

But Meyer stuck with him, and he ended his streak of four misses with a 34 yarder in the fourth quarter.

Henry said his coaches’ confidence, as well as that of his teammates, never wavered. Even still, Henry’s make was impressive for a guy who hasn’t played that position in three years and is now 4-for-8 on field goals.

“It was Chas Henry making a damn field goal,” Meyer said. “Think about that for a minute.”
