This weekend’s Georgia-Georgia Tech game for the Governor’s Cup will mark the first time the game has been played under the lights in Athens. And the lights could be shining on a rarity should Tech pull the upset.
Paul Johnson is 1-1 against the Bulldogs after his first two encounters with them. If he wins on Saturday he’ll be the first Yellow Jacket coach since Bobby Dodd to have a winning record against UGA after at least three games in the series. In other words, Tech hasn’t had a lot of success in this rivalry.
Georgia leads the all-time series 60-39-5 and Mark Richt is a stellar 8-1 against Tech. But five of the last six games have been decided by seven points or less and Tech won 45-42 the last time the teams met in Athens.
If you’re looking for a magic number in Saturday’s game, pay attention to the number 30.
Under Richt, Georgia is 53-7 when they score 30 points in a game. They’re just 6-14 when they give up 30.
On the other side of the field, Georgia Tech is a wicked 19-0 under Johnson when they put up 30 points. But they’re just 5-5 when they allow 30.
Seems pretty simple, doesn’t it? First team to 30 wins.
