Former Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer has emerged as a candidate for the vacant University of Minnesota job, according to Tom Dienhart’s Twitter feed.
Dienhart is the national college football writer for Rivals.com and Yahoo!
Fulmer last coached at Tennessee in 2008. He has done some media work with CBS Sports the past two seasons.
Minnesota would certainly add some big name clout to its program by hiring the former national championship-winning coach. And they would be rolling the dice that Fulmer could use his long-standing Southern recruiting ties to pull talent northward.
How strong a candidate Fulmer might be is anyone’s guess. Having just turned 60, the former Vol coach will likely have to overcome some amount of ageism to land the job.
If Fulmer did land the job, it would set up an interesting race for all to watch. Who could reach a bowl faster: Fulmer at Minnesota or Derek Dooley at Tennessee?
Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy — a Minnesota grad — recently turned down the Gophers.
