One of the men on Vanderbilt’s list of potential coaches should have a unique perspective on the job. Tommy Bowden has seen what life is like at a “have-not.” At Tulane, he lacked the big fanbase and superior facilities that other SEC-type schools enjoy. Then, while at Clemson, Bowden experienced life as a “have.” He knows what it takes to win in a BCS conference… though he never won quite enough to satisfy Tiger fans.
If asked, Bowden could take a quick look at the Vandy program and explain just what needs to be done around campus before the Commodores can truly expect to compete.
But would Bowden be interested in taking over the reins in Nashville? “If the right job opened, I would listen,” he told Rivals.com’s Tom Dienhart.
“I have had some phone calls and interest. But I’m not going to take a job to take it and then regret it a few months into it. I want to make sure I can succeed.”
And that’s probably all she wrote when it comes to Vandy.
To lure a proven coach like Bowden, Vanderbilt will need to show that they are willing to spend more money than they have in the past. Money for the head coach, for assistant coaches and for facility upgrades.
