I understand Cal's point, because many of those SEC fans would watch all three New Year's Day games, if they weren't on at the same time.

Glad to see the Arkansas-LSU game moved back to where it belongs, btw.

Cal...

But ESPN/ABC owns all three games. They're getting every SEC viewer they would get anyway... they're just spreading them out. Think of it as one big pie. ESPN/ABC owns the pie. You can cut the slices any way you like, but the pie is still the same... and ESPN/ABC owns it.

Makes sense. I just always thought that television ratings drove the networks to a certain extent. I guess that ESPN has so much money that they no longer need to worry about ratings because they have the market cornered.

Cal...

The SEC has no problem with ESPN's schedule as the network funnels big cash to the bowls... who in turn funnel that money right back to the SEC.

As we've discussed here previously, the SEC is "roadblocking" the college football world on New Year's Day. By playing three games at just about the same time, the SEC and Big Ten make it clear that they are the kings of the football world on the sport's biggest day. Turn your tv on... Big Ten vs SEC. Change channels... Big Ten vs SEC. Flip again... Big Ten vs SEC.

For recruiting purposes, it doesn't hurt to have three league teams playing opposite one another on New Year's afternoon. It insures that America will associate big-time New Year's Day football with the Southeastern Conference (and the Big Ten). Stinks for fans, but I would be surprised if the league asked for changes.

Works for me! But one thing that is upsetting is how ESPN dictates the start time for SEC games. It was hard to watch the SEC on New Years Day this season because Bama, Florida and Mississippi State were all playing at 1:00 or 1:30. Wouldn't it make more sense for ESPN to schedule these games at different times for ratings purposes? I'm guessing that I'm not the only person that wanted to watch all three of those teams bowl games and judging by the ratings the SEC bowl games were drawing it only makes sense to me that they should have started those bowls at different times. I used to enjoy watching the Outback Bowl at 11:00 a.m., didn't enjoy getting up for it when I went to the game however, but that game was fun to watch New Years morning (sure beat the heck out of the Rose Parade). My only problem with ESPN is they times that they have games starting. Too many regular season games are on at the same time also (usually 7:00 p.m. EST). How about a little variety so the football junkie doesn't have to choose one game every Saturday night or buy three tvs for the same room?
