I know because of UF's recent success, it's probably the trendy thing to hate on us and root for failure, or at least mediocrity. But you guys are seriously reaching here. Muschamp's hire is based solely on perception? Oh, really? He has been one of the most respected and sought-after coordinators for several years now for a reason. He's good. And if you pay attention you'll see that this is a textbook Foley choice. Foley doesn't want someone else's great coach, he's looking for the NEXT great coach. He wants someone who can become a legend at UF, not some other school's retread.

And Texas, like UF, had one bad year after tons of players left last year. When you have such limited resources to work with player-wise, that doesn't mean anything. UF "found a way to underachieve" because Urban was barely doing anything this year. He was a figurehead biding his time until the end of the season. He let Addazio take the reins and didn't interfere, and that's what sent everything into a downward spiral. I'm glad you like Dooley so much, but he wasn't hyped because no one knew or cared who he was.

Scott,

Yep, Dodd missed the boat on those hires but he also missed it on Mike Sherman (who he had 15th), Ken Niumatalolo (at 8th), Art Briles AT 12! and Bobby Petrino at 6th. All four of those guys if you asked their current schools would probably be considered top 5 hires looking back.

In 2008 Rich Rodriguez was a good hire. That is the real problem with Muschamp. He was made coach in waiting based on perception. He was hired by Florida based on perception. Now perception becomes reality. Think about it one or two more season of bad football at Texas and Muschamp could have been on the unemployment line, head coach in waiting only works if the coach retires. He could be the next Urban Myer and he could the next Rich Rodriguez. As for Charlie Weis the only fear is he will jump for and NFL job. As For Franklin He is also an unknown. If he is as good a recruiter as they say he may create southern ties very quickly. I am not sure in the long run will be the biggest hindrance to there coach, Florida's success or Vandy's lack of.

A couple of more things, Florida doesn't need a big name offensive coordinator to recruit. The program's recent success sells itself, so does it's facilities, campus, Gator Dazzlers, etc. I think they would have been better off going away from Weis as I stated earlier, UF doesn't need him to recruit. Plus, his only real ties to the Southeast were four years he spent at South Carolina besides that he has been in the Northeast or Midwest his whole career. Also, I see a major power struggle presenting itself between the young Muschamp and the elder this is how I did at Notre Dame Weis. Just my thoughts. P.S. The thing that Muschamp has going for him is he coached under Saban (beginning to see a pattern here with Saban assistants and a developing coaching tree).

Let's not pay too much attention to Dennis Dodd. Found his column ranking the 2008 hires and he has Rich Rodriguez and Rick Nueheisel #"s 1 and 2.

After watching Texas stumble last year with all of those 4 and 5 star players, I'm glad that Tennessee went with Derek Dooley and Muschamp (a guy built solely on hype) didn't accept the Tennessee job. Florida has a roster full of 4 and 5 star guys like Texas has but Florida until the early 90's always underachieved with the same talent that they have now. What happens in Gainesville when Muschamp's program underachieves like his Texas team did last season? It's bound to happen, the Gators found a way to underachieve this season with Gainseville God Urban Meyer (and Urban Meyer was a proven, heckuva football coach). I really don't like the Charlie Weis hire either? Without the Hoodie, Weis has proven to be a mediocre coach (who knows how involved he actually was with the Chiefs this season as we all know their was a major rift between him and Todd Haley).
