The ‘stache has coached his last game for Pittsburgh. Ousted head coach Dave Wannstedt has decided — rather late in the process — that he will not coach his Panthers in their bowl game against Kentucky.
Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will serve as Pitt’s interim coach in the BBVA Compass Bowl on Saturday.
Wannstedt was Pitt’s most successful coach since the days of Jackie Sherrill and Johnny Majors, but that wasn’t enough to save him after a disappointing 7-5 season.
Former Miami (Ohio) coach Mike Haywood was hired to replace him, but he was fired on Saturday after being jailed on a felony domestic violence charge.
Wannstedt’s decision could be good news for Kentucky. The Wildcats will no longer be facing a squad trying to send its coach out as a winner.
