Cowherd Says A Top 12 Program’s About To Get Hit By The NCAA… SEC Rumors Start Swirling

ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd set the rumor mill in motion yesterday afternoon when he said that he had received a tip that “a major program in this country is going to be outed very soon for major recruiting violations.”  He said the program is a Top 10 or Top 12 program.  (In last year’s polls?  In his eyes?)

The folks at CollegeFootballTalk.com have apparently heard a similar rumor, but neither Cowherd nor the website are revealing which program might be the target of NCAA sleuths.  At least Cowherd is saying who is not the target:

A major publication is about to unseat a major college football power on recruiting violations.  I will tell you from my source, it is not — it is not — Auburn.  I will leave it at that.  It is a major program and a major publication.

Immediately, fingers began pointing toward Oregon.  But John Canzano of The Oregonian reported that folks inside the Duck athletic department were “surprised” to hear of the rumors.  Head coach Chip Kelly said he was unaware of any violations.

At that point, SportsByBrooks.com jumped into the fray via Twitter and Facebook.  A few of the sites Twitter nuggets (or Twuggets):

Mult. ESPN sources have now verified to me Cowherd was referencing Oregon as school to be “outed very soon for major recruiting violations.

And — because a cheating rumor can’t exist without an SEC tie:

I talked to several sources today about LSU.  NCAA is absolutely not investigating LSU football program.

Of course, the last time Cowherd set off a wild internet free-for-all he was claiming to know the secret identity of Florida’s next football coach.  He used the acronym STAB to reveal the identity of the coach before he was hired.

What STAB ultimately had to do with Will Muschamp?  No clue.  (And feel free to clue me in if you’re a regular listener to Cowherd.  I am not.)

The program in question is Alabama. Saban is a great recruiter, but not that great. The recruiting "success" that they have had the last few years is just ridiculous. Alabama is used to getting a hall pass from the NCAA, being one of the sacred cows along with Notre Dame and Nebraska. But no longer! The Albert Means recruitment was just too messy and noisy to ignore. Fulmer pitched a fit, breaking the Omerta code among coaches. The NCAA can't look the other way like they used to regarding Alabama.

Alabama can't tolerate Auburn going on a 6-0 run in the Iron Bowl, coming back from 24-0 in this year's Iron Bowl, or Auburn winning the 2010 National Championship. Expect more rule-breaking from Alabama because they are the ultimate sore loser. War Eagle.

Fail.

And I really can't believe that any Auburn fan would have the gall to talk smack given what could befall the program in the very near future. Last season was all about violations. Sad way to win a title.

And like the previous comment, I'm no 'Bama fan. I actually dislike the SEC. But get real.

???

They've suffered two of the worst rounds of penalties ever handed out in the past two decades.

That's a sacred cow? Get a life.

No matter where he goes Colin Cowherd is a moron. He lives in his own little world and doesn’t care for the opinion of others even though 99% of the population is smarter than him. It’s only a matter of time until he trash talks someone and they kick the sh*t out of him. They should televise it when it happens. It’s always hilarious when he waxes philosophical on his show. I guess he likes to fantasize that he actually has a brain. If he did have a brain, he wouldn’t have to make things up on his show.

Well at least we know it is not UT. Finally a rumor that is not being pointed at UT.

It is Alabama. Why else would he go out of his way to say it was not Auburn?

Because people would think it was about Cam Newton...

Colin got STAB wrong. "Southern Ties Advantage Bo" = Bo Pelini. Colin fessed up to his mistake, though.

Ah. And many thanks to you.

I'm positive the "STAB" hint regarding Muschamp is an acronym meaning Saban, Tubberville And Brown, regarding the three head coaches Muschamp has worked under as a defensive coach.

Kris...

Ah. Of course, throwing out an acronym, Cowherd could found a STAB connection to anyone Florida hired.

Thanks,
John
