At halftime of this year’s spring game, Florida officials will unveil three life-sized statues of the Gators’ Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow.
The three statues — which will be installed on the west side of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — weigh a combined 17,000 pounds. According to UF officials, all three honorees will have a level of participation in the event. (Meaning Spurrier will probably send along a video message while Tebow and Wuerffel attend.)
We’ve got no problems with statues. Tennessee added a statue of former coach Robert Neyland last fall. And Alabama will add a state of Nick Saban at its spring game. (In case you’re wondering, every Bama coach to win a national title gets a statue.) We believe these monuments are a nice way to celebrate tradition.
Just as long as they don’t remind us of Dr. Zaius.
