Cam's academic problems have been common knowledge in Gainesville, Fl. since he left. A lot of recruitniks were almost jumping out of windows when they heard he left. Urban Meyer recruited two Heisman Trophy winners (maybe three, we will see) in six years (or 5 to the purists), Timmy and Cam. Cam was being drooled over as the next heir apparent. The kid has no class. The Gainesville Sun ran a story last year revealing the exact reports from Law Enforcement to the students involved that would have shoved a turkey bone in his Heisman voting. I was so unimpressed with "Cam the man", I couldn't root for or watch my former Gator player "Cam the athlete". His nonsense is well known in Gator lore. Nobody had to leak anything. All the reporter had to do was walk in a campus area bar and start buying drinks. After 15 to 20 people tell you the same thing, spread out over days, you have something 15 to 20 people are is convinced truth. If you start taking faculty to Mark's prime, you find out even more.

Mike...

Who said reporters aren't wrong? I'm often quoted as writing things that just aren't there. Where did I say reporters aren't wrong?

Everyone makes mistake. Even anonymous posters in comment boxes.

What I said was that reporters usually don't want to throw away their careers by making completely false, dreamed up claims. Therefore it's likely that Evans heard word from someone on Florida's campus regarding Cam Newton's academic issues. Who else would be privy to such info?

The messageboard issue you're referring to was a post on a Rivals site by a person whose brother worked in the Florida athletic department. That person -- who was identified, not anonymous -- reported that Evans's academic cheating piece was on the way.

Perhaps you don't find it highly coincidental that someone with a known UF connection posted just before a major allegation came out that -- wait for it -- a source at UF had told him that a major allegation was coming out, but most people did and do.

Didn't Evans base his report on an anonymous poster from internet message board? Or was that you? And didn't a member of the Florida's Student Committee deny that Cam was asked to appear before it due to cheating?

In any case, reporters are wrong all the time.

Mike...

I doubt that Thayer Evans of FoxSports.com just made up a charge with no backing or information. Sorry, but most folks in the media don't like the idea of losing their jobs due to deceit and fabrication.

So someone leaked info to Evans. Evans believed it enough to run with it. Now, the person leaking the info might have been lying, but either way, there should be some investigation into who leaked information about Cam Newton's academic career.

"The academic cheating charge came late last year through a FoxSports.com report, but we at MrSEC.com have not seen any type of follow-up or confirmation of the report. Maybe we just missed it. (We still think someone should get the book thrown at them for illegally releasing information about a student’s academic records.)"

Or maybe it was a bogus report that he cheated. IOW, completely untrue. Which means no one would "get the book thrown at them for illegally releasing information about a student’s academic records."
