SEC Lands 2 In Hoops Attendance Top 5

The NCAA released the attendance figures for the 2010-11 basketball season yesterday and the Southeastern Conference placed two teams in the Top 5 nationally — Kentucky and Tennessee.

The top-ranked Wildcats will no doubt draw huge crowds to Rupp Arena next year as John Calipari’s next wave of star youngsters arrive in the Bluegrass State.  But no one knows what to expect at fifth-ranked Tennessee, where the Vols have dismissed a wildly popular coach and face a year of uncertainties when it comes to NCAA sanctions and a thin roster.

The SEC by the numbers:

SEC Rank  National Rank  School  Games  Avg. Attendance
Kentucky  15  23,603
Tennessee  18  18,952
18  Vanderbilt  17  13,802
29  Arkansas  19  11,884
35  Alabama  19  10,983
41  S. Carolina  17  10,427
42  Florida  17  10,186
60  Georgia  16  8,250
74  LSU  18  7,153
10  82  Ole Miss  17  6,360
11  83  Auburn  20  6,324
12  94  Miss. State  17  5,710

Observations:

* Arkansas finished outside the Top 25 in attendance for the first time since Bud Walton Arena opened.  That likely won’t be the case next year with Mike Anderson now on the sideline.

* Kudos to South Carolina fans for finishing in the top half of the league in attendance despite a last-place finish in the SEC East.

* Florida fans should be ashamed.  Sure the O’Connell Center only seats 12,000, but Gator-backers didn’t even fill their bandbox.  Billy Donovan has won two national titles and led UF to an SEC outright title this past year.  What’s it take to pack a Florida basketball game?

* Good basketball or not, the fans at LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn were bested in attendance by schools such as Utah State, Bradley, Old Dominion and Siena.  That’s a Hall of Shame performance.

* Rick Stansbury is lucky to still have his job.  Not only did his Bulldogs wildly underachieve this year, but State’s attendance was the lowest in the league and ranked below that of UCF, St. Louis, George Mason, and Weber State.  That’s an embarrassment to the SEC.

Another Weed Issue For Florida

You can add another SEC player to the list of guys who stupidly failed drug tests at the NFL combine this past February.  No shock here, the failed test belonged to a Florida Gator.

By now you’re well aware of these two facts:

* UF has a very liberal five-strikes drug policy for its athletes

* A former member of the 2006 national championship Gators estimated that 75% of his teammates smoked pot

So the fact that former UF offensive lineman Maurice Hurt tested positive at the combine for marijuana is par for the course.  In fact, Hurt is the third Gator in as many years to fail a drug test for weed at the combine.  The others were Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez.

Hurt joins Georgia’s Justin Houston and Iowa’s Christian Ballard on this year’s list of dimwits.

If you know you’re going to be drug tested, how do you light up beforehand?

UT Cancels Basketball Trip To Italy

Tennessee has cancelled a summer trip to Italy for its basketball team.  Two reasons were given for the switch: travel and Cuonzo Martin’s duties at the World University Games.

According to athletic director Mike Hamilton, the trip would have been difficult from a travel perspective with the Vols also now heading to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational in November.

In addition, Martin is scheduled to serve on the staff of Purdue’s Matt Painter when he coaches the US team in the World University Games in China in August.  Training will be held for that event in Colorado from July 30th through August 8th.

“It will be better to wait a year for the trip because then we can get a feel for our players,” Martin said.  “When you take those trips, you’re also building team camaraderie.  It’s always a beneficial trip, playing five or six games and getting extra practice.”

For those reasons, it would seem to actually make more sense to take the trip this year, as Martin is laying the foundation for his program.  But let’s face facts — you don’t back out after you accept a position coaching a US national team.

Also, with Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris possibly NBA-bound, the Vols might have had a hard time even filling out a roster this summer.

Calipari Considers Coaching Dominican Republic Team

The rumor has been floating around for months and finally John Calipari has acknowledged it — he’s considering coaching the Dominican Republic’s national team in the Tournament of the Americas.  The tournament will be held August 30th through September 11th in Argentina.

“My question to the Dominican Basketball Federation was, why are you calling me?” Calipari wrote on his Facebook page yesterday.  “Their response was, they liked what we are doing in China, including coaching their coaches and being involved in promoting grassroots basketball.”

If Calipari accepts the job, the Dominican team will train at UK, so the coach won’t be forced to spend too much time away from his main job.

Interestingly, Louisville’s Rick Pitino is already scheduled to coach Puerto Rico in the international tournament.

UPDATE — Rick Pitino has pulled out of his duties with the Puerto Rican team just this morning.

Meyer’s Daughter: Dad Isn’t Going To OSU

Urban Meyer’s daughter Nicki has heard enough of the rumors linking her dad to Ohio State.  And she’s tired of people quizzing her about the possibility.

Stop txting me abt my dad.  HE IS NOT repeat NOT, GOING TO OHIO STATE.  thanks.

Sounds like someone who enjoys having her father off the sidelines.  It also sounds like someone who doesn’t want her father worrying about reporters and rumors.

Good for her.  While the Meyer to OSU story makes sense — Jim Tressel’s in trouble, Meyer’s from Ohio, etc, etc — we’re about 200 steps from anything resembling the ex-Florida coach stalking the Ohio State sideline.

And perhaps, like Jon Gruden, Meyer might enjoy media work more than anyone seems to expect.

UPDATE — As it turns out, Gigi Meyer — Nicki’s sister — also got into the act when it came to snuffing out rumors and defending Papa Meyer.

Alabama Offers Michigan Lineman; Tennessee Still Leads

Alabama has extended a scholarship offer to defensive tackle Danny O’Brien from Flint (Mich.) Powers Catholic High School.

“I’m pretty excited,” O’Brien told 247Sports.com. “I was kind of waiting on this one for a little while, and it’s great to get it.”

Alabama is the second SEC school to offer O’Brien, who told the website he still favors Tennessee. O’Brien also has offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

O’Brien, who said he would like to make his college decision before his senior season begins, has upcoming trips scheduled to Michigan State and Alabama.

Florida State Lands SEC Prospect Taylor

Florida State has received a commitment from defensive tackle Alphonse Taylor from Davidson High School from Mobile, Ala.

Taylor has also received interest from Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Mississippi State, although Florida State is the only school to make an offer so far.

Taylor was recruited to Florida State by former Auburn quarterback Dameyune Craig, who coaches quarterbacks for the Seminoles.

Craig has also landed a commitment from Mobile linebacker Craig Casher, who chose Florida State over an offer from Auburn.

Ex-Dawg Green Had To Answer Questions About His Wonderlic Score

When ex-Georgia receiver AJ Green met with reporters after UGA’s pro day last month, he had to answer questions not just about his on-field play, but also regarding his Wonderlic score.

Green reportedly scored a 10 on the test given out at the NFL combine each year.  His score was one of the five lowest scores recorded by this year’s class of 330 players.  (LSU’s Patrick Peterson reportedly scored a nine.)

According to The Chattanooga Times Free Press, ESPN’s Todd McShay doesn’t think the low score on the problem-solving quiz — it’s not an IQ test — will hurt Green’s draft stock.

“I really don’t think it will have any bearing.  They use this Wonderlic test to basically go through and see if any red flags occur, and then they’ll go back, whether it’s meeting with the individual, in this case Green, or talking to people who have been around him to getting to know better how his football intelligence is.”

Most teams spend time during their one-on-one meetings with players asking the potential draftee to diagram plays or explain concepts.  If Green was able to do that to a satisfactory level, then it’s likely the Wonderlic score will have little effect.

And remember, Green isn’t playing quarterback or middle linebacker.  His responsibility is to go head-to-head with a defensive back and get open.  As we’ve all seen in his three years of SEC play… that he can surely do.
