We linked you to this story over the weekend, but we think one quote deserves a bit more attention.
Houston football coach Kevin Sumlin once explained to Joker Phillips the difficulty in being a first-time head coach. This weekend, Phillips told the Lexington media that he now understands what Sumlin meant:
“He said, ‘Nothing really prepares you for it.’ Everybody says if you’re a coordinator, it prepares you to be a head coach, but that’s not true. There’s so many little things that you have to take care of…
There’s nothing that really prepares you for all of the things that come up during the season.”
That’s an honest admission by Phillips and that’s a comment that’s not often uttered by recently promoted coaches.
