Quarterback Jameis Winston from Hueytown (Ala.) High School has committed to Florida State over Alabama.
Winston, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 1 quarterback by ESPN, said Alabama was a “very close” second to Florida State.
“I love all those Alabama fans,” Winston said. “I’m from Alabama. I love them. Tuscaloosa is just 35 minutes down the road. I’m going to have to live with that, but I can.”
But can Florida State get Winston to Tallahassee? That will be the question next spring when the Major League Baseball draft rolls around.
Winston is ranked the nation’s No. 22 prep baseball prospect by Perfect Game, a high school baseball scouting service. Winston has made it clear he will consider going pro in baseball if he’s drafted high enough.
“I don’t think too many (college) fans will get mad at me if I go into the draft,” Winston said.
Alabama has 14 commitments for the class of 2012 but none at the quarterback position.
