Miles Loves The “Want” Of His Defense

Through three games, LSU defense looks as good, fast, mean, smart and powerful as any defensive unit in college football.  Heck, even the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs might trade D’s straight up with Les Miles if they could.

Miles, no surprise, loves what he’s seen from John Chavis’ latest group:

“I am the LSU coach, and I love every one of those teams (his current squad is being compared to).  I can tell you that this defense is one of the fastest teams that I’ve had.  There are more big-time plays made on this defense than I’ve been around for a while.  If the defense continues to play with that intensity, it has the opportunity to be a special defense…

You can coach it and insist on it, but there comes a natural intensity that this defense seems to bring.  There are some guys that take the field that just can’t wait for the next play.  That is a wonderful piece for a defense.  Just line the offense up so that we can get one more play in.  That kind of want is pretty special.”

How special can LSU’s defense be?  Well, it’s way too soon to be making serious comparisons, but if the Tigers play as well in their last nine games as they have in their first three, they might deserve mention alongside the 1992 Alabama defense — which for my money is the best SEC defense of the past quarter-century.
