Because Lorenzo Ward's title is "Defensive Coordinator," while Ellis Johnson's is "Assistant Head Coach and Assistant Coach of Defense and Linebackers."

But Johnson is at the top of the defensive org chart… and in most cases that person carries the title of defensive coordinator.

So, while he's technically NOT the Cocks' DC, he does act in that role. Thus, "de facto defensive coordinator."
