Jerry Palm and his computer ranking system usually become a topic of conversation around the turn of the year. Best known as a basketball/numbers whiz, Palm has set his chips to crank out football rankings, too, in recent years and this week CBSSports.com has had him look at every team in the FBS ranks.
Going from 1 to 120, there are a few surprises when it comes to SEC teams:
1. Alabama 6-0 — No shock there.
4. LSU 6-0 — Ranked behind Boise State (#2) and Oklahoma (#3), it is a surprise to see a team with three away-from-home victories over ranked opponents listed behind teams that haven’t come close to playing a similar schedule.
15. South Carolina 5-1
18. Arkansas 5-1
32. Auburn 4-2
33. Georgia 4-2
38. Florida 4-2
46. Vanderbilt 3-2
50. Tennessee 3-2
62. Mississippi State 3-3
90. Ole Miss 2-3 — I’ve seen Ole Miss play and I don’t think they’re nearly as bad as Kentucky.
94. Kentucky 2-4 — And having seen Kentucky struggle on offense and defense, I don’t know that there are 25 teams in America worse than the Cats right now.
In case you’re wondering, Texas A&M comes in at #31 just ahead of Auburn and Georgia. That would make them the SEC’s fifth-best team this season (according to Palm’s computers).
Possible member Missouri — suffering through an unexpectedly rough season — is #61 on the list, on slot ahead of Mississippi State.
