The way LSU's rule were written, there was latitude to handle it just about any way they wanted to. When a rule is that adjustable, it's easy to prevent key players from missing big games.

First, no one has any evidence that this was anything other than a first failed drug test. If that's the case, then the three were given a harsher punishment than the minimum required by LSU's drug policy and by the drug policies at most schools (both in and outside the SEC). Second, even if it was a second failed drug test, the players are still receiving the minimum punishment required. % of games penalties are rounded down. The LSU standard of 15% was no doubt set to look as tough as possible while still on resulting in a one-game suspension. (Remember that the penalties apply to other sports as well.) And the fact still remains that only 5 SEC schools have penalties greater than a one-game suspension in football for a second drug offense. So, even in the worst case, the LSU players are neither receiving a lighter penalty than required nor than the majority of the conference.

Being good at sports trumps what is right or wrong. It really hasn't mattered what the issue is or what school is involved. If you can play well, the issue is handled in house and you are reinstated. You are even given multiple chances to change. If you can't play, you are shown the door. Double standard? Yes. Just the way it is though.
Why would the NCAA and SEC overlook a rule for the Auburn QB Cam Newton? The rule clearly stated that if someone was shopping or being shopped for money "pay for play" they would not be NCAA eligible. Tweak the rule a little to say if the player knew nothing about it that it didn't apply. Can you imagine all the behind the scenes wrangling that went on to get this done? Can you imagine this taking place for a 2nd string lineman? No. It is unfortunate that our young people are taught through this that a double standard exists. And unfortunate that being good in sports trumps what is right and wrong.
