First let me say thanks for the kind comments!

That was a pretty good Arkansas team. It was Nutt's first year and he took over a team that was well-versed in the fundamentals of the game by Danny Ford. Nutt gave them hope with his overly-enthusiastic approach and they truly gave everything they had each time out: so much so that I felt really good about going into Knoxville that year, unlike I did when we went into Tuscaloosa this season. It still took a near perfect game from them to almost pull off the upset.

The next week we lost to MSU in Starkville, which meant that MSU would tie us for the division and go to the SECCG due to winning the head-to-head. MSU wasn't nearly as good (I knew Tennessee would kill them in the SECCG), but we lost because the team was still drowning in their sorrow from the week before (this was the first "down" in the "up and down" roller coaster ride that's a characteristic of a Nutt-coached team.) Nutt had also suspended our talented FG kicker before the game and, of course, the game came down to Arkansas missing a FG (btw, the ball was inline with one of the goal posts on that FG and there are people who still claim that it went through, and in all honesty, you really couldn't tell either way on TV, so I don't know.) Arkansas finished the year in the Capital One Bowl (I think it was the Citrus back then), losing to a decent Michigan team by something like 10 points, so we finished 10-3 on the year. There was also a lot of drama that occurred before the bowl that I won't go into, but I'm sure it affected our preparations for the game. However, we've always sucked in bowl games, so I'm not making any excuses.

When TN won a NC, I honestly thought Fulmer would win another one because TN was so on top of the world. Fulmer was still relatively young, and TN was absolutely loaded with talent at every position. Unfortunately, things only went downhill from there.

I can't say I was happy TN lost to Arkansas in '99, but it was the easiest loss I've ever had to swallow b/c a part of me was happy to see Stoerner have a bit of redemption.

Finally, while Arkansas was definitely good that year, you can't really say they were one fumble away from playing for a NC because things went downhill from there. Didn't Arkansas lose 2-3 more games that year? That game probably took the wind out of their sails, but hard to say that one play is what kept them from playing for the NC.

Nutt isn't a good coach. He might be a good person and a great motivator, but he isn't a good coach. Danny Ford had that team loaded for him. Same situation when he went to Ole Miss. When he left Arkansas, he had peyton Hillis, Felix Jones, and Darren McFadden in the backfield. What did he do with all that tallent? Let it go to waste. Another reason was his huge ego. In 2006 when he had Malzone calling the play and they were 7-1. Mustain had not lost one game and he throws a pick and he doesn't play the rest of the year. Malzone goes nuts and he's out at the end of the year. Houston Nutt is a joke of a coach.

I still can't believe Tennessee didn't win more national titles during that time. I was living in east tennessee at the time and will never forget that game. When Arkansas made that previous first down, that was it. I think the Vols had one more timeout left. All my friends had their heads down and were saying great game. I was calling the hogs. And then the play that all Vols fans will never forget. The same with Razorback fans. I think that game did something to Houston Nutt. Until that game, Arkansas wasn't conservative. After that game, it was run, run, and run. I can't believe it was 13 years ago. I hated it when the SEC took away the second crossrival game. Because the Tennessee-Arkansas games were so much fun. NOw we will be playing once every 5 or 6 years I guess it will be. With 14 schools in the conference next season. Another reason I hate so many schools in the same conference. Unless you're going to play a ten game conference schedule.

I am dead serious, I will always remember him. I truly thought we were beat that day. By the way, I met my wife at an Arkansas game, despite she was cheering for the Hogs. Arkansas keeps being prominent in my life. Good luck Saturday, I'm afraid we will need it more.

Teams that have won 24 of their last 29 really don't have to reminisce all that much. Not trying to bash Tennessee, I like Dooley and if his guys can stay healthy they'll get back to where they belong. But right is Petrino's program-building time.

Do you HAVE to badmouth Nutt every single time the Hogs are mentioned? Nutt was the best coach in America in 1998, taking a team coming off back to back 4-7 seasons and leading them to an 8-0 start and one fumble away from likely playing for the national title!

Besides, the fumble wasn't his fault anyway. One of his own linemen stepped on his foot to trip him up. If we had gone ahead and just taken a knee it wouldn't have happened either. Poor old Hooten

He was a good Razorback whose most memorable games were against Tennessee, including the win his Senior year. He's the perfect choice, not an odd one.
