Tennessee fans have a tendency to overreact and make brash decisions. Look at how they (with the help of Phil Fulmer) back-stabbed Johnny Majors. Or the way they rode Phil out. Heck, even though Lane Kiffin made a decision that 95% of Vols fans would make (here is your dream job. the job you've wanted ever since you first learned you'd have to work for a living. want it? Duh.), they've been nothing short of cruel toward the guy (admittedly, Lane could have handled the situation better...).

It would be unfortunate for Vols fans to run Dooley out after 2 seasons, but as I said, they do tend toward such behavior.

Fortunately for Dooley, David Heart is probably not inclined toward rash decisions.

Tennessee is all about money! I have been a season ticket holder since 1979 and a member of VASF since 1986. You can't give them enough money. Tenn is the highest priced ticket in the SEC. They will tow your car at the drop of a hat. You don't raise taxes during a recession and you don't raise ticket prices during a recession. I could not give away my tickets this year. I had four tickets in my pocket at the USC game. UT lock the RV dump, I gave them thousands of dollars and I can't dump. They are greedy, they have spent millions and can't beat Kentucky with a WR at Quarterback.

Nope, you Mcgee you are wrong. 5 mil is nothing to a program like UT. You are truley underestimating how bad the program was when Dooley took over. If he is fired this year, UT to be at square negative 1, and you couldn't throw enough money at another coach to take over the program.

These so called UT fans need to lay off and cut Dooley some slack. As a die hard Tennessee fan myself, I'm also tired of seeing drama and losing in Knoxville also. But kick dooley to the curb? Really? That's the answer for the Tennessee football program? After everything that happened with the trouble maker athletes, Fulmer resigning and let's not forget the Kiffin saga. The answer is to find ANOTHER new coach? Dooley took over a program in shambles. Tennessee will improve; Dooley will improve and the volunteer football prestige will be restored. We can't just continually start over and over and over again. Everyone knows that nothing gets better until it gets worse. Keep Dooley and the Vols will do better. Prediction: Bowl season next year.

[...] As we noted here yesterday, Tennessee’s football squad looks to be Team Turmoil heading into the offseason. There were players unhappy with other players this season. Players unhappy with coaches for throwing them under the bus and for using double-standards when it came to discipline. There was a lack of leadership from veterans (mainly because there were very few veterans in the first place) and the youngsters who became de facto leaders had serious attitude problems. All of that’s what’s swirling around the Tennessee program heading into a bowl-less offseason. Good luck, Derek Dooley.Yesterday, tailback Tauren Poole — one of the seniors who called out some younger teammates after the Vols’ loss to Kentucky on Saturday — opened up about the mess at UT on WNOX-FM in Knoxville yesterday.Asked whether — in hindsight — he would go to UT again, Poole said:“If you’d have told me Coach (Phillip) Fulmer would have gotten fired and then this coach, that coach, this strength coach, that position coach, I probably wouldn’t have came here because I knew it would have been a dysfunctional setup, an unstable program… It was a tough situation. It was a roller-coaster ride.”And what does he mean by roller-coaster ride?“Guys kind of shut it down (against Kentucky). All the seniors, we cared. We cared more than a lot of those guys out there. And that’s expected, but we weren’t getting it back. Those guys have next year to look forward to. We don’t. My career is over at UT.”And what about his coach’s critical tongue… which he uses to critique his players in the media with great regularity?“Coach Dooley is a very critical guy. He’s critical of his players and coaches. It’s criticism and you’ve got to take it in. Guys just got to have thick skin with Coach Dooley. He’s going to speak his mind. Every minute of the day, every moment, if he’s got an opinion, he’s going to tell you. That’s just the type of guy he is.”Dooley is rebuilding Tennessee’s roster and is one his way to a third-consecutive Top 15 signing class. As for building a “team,” well, it sounds like that’s his next challenge.
The current situation at UT was unavoidable and unfortunately, there is no easy fix. Not too long ago a head coaching job at UT was one of the ten best coaching gigs in the country--great facilities, the second-largest on-campus stadium in the NCAA, great tradition, etc. But now a lot of other SEC teams have similar facilities AND a much better in-state recruiting base and neither do they suffer from lack of tradition. Dooley was probably the best Mike Hamilton could do given the circumstances. The Big Orange Faithful would have revolted had Hamilton hired someone like James Franklin! Hamilton was forced to hire the best big-name coach available, even if the "name" was established by the candidate's coaching father. Dooley has not surrounded himself with SEC-caliber assistants and it's obvious that he has issues relating to and motivating his team. The Tennessee coaching job, given the in-state recruiting woes and the rise of other programs, is at best barely a top 20 coaching job now. Guys like Gruden, Urban Meyer--hell, even Gary Patterson--wouldn't even consider Tennessee. Will Muschamp is a case-in-point. The only solution to this dilemma--and I've said it all along--is to bring in an older guy (Cutcliffe would be ideal) and an alum by the name of Peyton to work under him for a few years as a head coach-in-waiting. Only then will UT be able to regain its stature recruiting nationally and lure top-notch prospects away from other school. (Dooley may be on the way toward his third top-15 recruiting classe but Fulmer won a national championship with top-five classes. And Dooley doesn't have the talent or staff to win championships with anything less.) How many high school QB's out there who would want Peyton as their coach? And how many top-notch WR's and running backs would follow those QB's, not to mention big, strong OL's who would want to protect them? With Peyton considering retirement, if Dave Hart isn't thinking about this, he's an idiot!

DD should NOT be fired - there still needs to be more time for the bamboo to be watered. 2012 has always been the target. That being said, being a no-show at UK was absolutely the worst thing that he needed for the master plan. What he has to do is clean house on the offensive side of the ball. Chaney as OC has to go sooner rather than later - he's not recruiting much anyway. OL, RB, and Kickers have underperformed all year.

I agree 100% with you John, I was sick when I heard that we hired a coach just coming off a 4-8 season with overall losing record in the WAC!. The guy that wrote this article is an wrong, if UT was able to hire a PROVEN coach say Jim Tressel it couldn't be worse and would be huge boost for recuiting and fan base. I'm guessing Hart already has his feelers out looking for a coach and depending on how things go next year see when to pull the trigger.

My advice to UT is this, if he isn't fired, hire another coach who can function like a head coach; remember Dave Cutcliffe? However, if even 10% of the reports are true, DD has lost this team by his lack of basic leadership skills; bringing into question if he has the ability to even coach this team; much less rebuilt it. I've seen nothing from DD which would indicate he can either coach or motivate players. In fact the evidence points to the fact he can't do either....i.e. the Kentucky loss.

I don't think Dooley should be fired. If he is fired after two seasons and with 4 years left on his contract, it will show that the administration and the fanbase do not have realistic expectations with the work that needs to be done.

To put it another way - If we had Saban/Miles coaching the last two years, then how many more wins would we have? Not much more than with Dooley. Dooley has been on a 3-4 year rebuilding plan from the beginning. He has not gone out and tabbed a lot of Jr College players and is rebuilding the program from within, and not trying to do a quick fix. He was told that he would have time to rebuild the program and is using the blue print used by Saban at LSU.

I agree with both of your points. I was rooting for Kippy and thought he would have been a reat hire, not just a one year band-aid. However if he had been given a one year contract it would have allowed us to address the situation in a timely manner and not make a panic hire and force the new coach to retain staff from Kiffin.

As for the UT being tough school to win at, it was just in referrence to the fact that you cannot just show up and build a fence around the state and win like you can at OhioSt., Florida, LSU Bama, Texas and other schools. You have to recruit nationally against schools from all over the nation. UT is different and what make it a special place.

Daryl...

I don't think anyone suggested Tennessee fans "enjoy" losing. At the same time, it's called patience. If you're sick, you go get treatment. The treatment isn't pleasant -- in most cases -- but if it works, you do it for as long as is necessary.

A rebuilt roster should be ALL that matters right now. Dooley is restocking it well and has a #12 rated class right now. Would you rather try to win next year and start back at Ground Zero again... or would you rather go 6-6 next year and turn a full roster over to a new coach who's be more willing to take the job next year?

It's short term versus long term thinking.

I think that most Tenn are very astute students of the game and are a bit taken aback at the product on the field, even with all the setbacks the program has experienced. Dooley has shown his good side and what he has accomplished in cleaning up the off the field incidents, but his dressing down players in public, could anyone possibly be shocked at the environment in that locker room and the motivation shown on the field by the players. You have a new AD with major college FB program experience who is not stupid, he sees what the fans have seen all year, both coordinators need to go, the play calling on both sides of the ball have been, well sickening. You find an offensive play that works, you run it till they stop it, then you go to something else that works, and repeat the process, this need to balance out your offense doesn't win games. KY oh yeah such a defensive gem, Wilcox still had his guys chasing plays north and south instead of maintaining their gaps and stringing plays out sideline to sideline, when the entire world knew what was coming. Leadership humm something that has been missing and is still missing for quite a few years now, and the blame lies not just with individuals in the program, but with the fans who will sit by idle and tolerate this. If there are no shake-ups within the current coaching staff this off season, look for more of the same excuses used all year as to why Tenn is putting a heartless team on the field with all that talent, and being humiliated by lesser teams

Definitely was going to be a tough year, especially with the most difficult West rotation possible, but I disagree on two points.

1. Kippy Brown should've been retained as an interim coach after Kiffin left, and been given a full season to try out for the job/give UT time to conduct a year-long search. Dooley was a panic hire by Hamilton/Cheek/Board of Trustees.

2. Historically, UT is not a tough place to win. We are the second best all-time program in the SEC, and have been winning for a hundred years. Do we have recruiting disadvantages? Of course. But we have three things that make it a great job: facilities, fanbase, and money. We should never be this bad.

All of this being said, however, I think there is no chance Dooley gets fired now. He will get one more year and I guess we'll see how that turns out. Recruiting class seems OK for now, although most of our SEC opponents have classes ranked even higher.

I think the heat comes solely from lack of wins. A surprising loss at Kentucky was a powder keg, but it is not an accurate gauge of the overall state of the program. A fan base that was itching to complain about ugly losses which were to top ten teams found an undisputed in with the Kentucky debacle. The comments made by two players concerning stats and “prestige of bowl games” were primarily directed at a single player (D.R.) and not the team as a whole. This is a relative side show and some form of this nonsense is to be expected when a team racks up too high of a sum in loss column.

Get real Tennessee fans. I don’t care who you are…. when you are forced to select a coach who is something less than a proven champion on your level (SEC), you never really know if he is going to be able to do the job or not. Sometimes not even that is enough (e.g. Rich Rod) as the fit is bad. Two years ago when Dooley was hired, Tennessee did not know what he would be capable of in his current position.
Two years later we know that DD is probably a good fit culturally and can recruit well. He appears to have reduced the “bad apple’ count significantly. This is about half of the picture.

For the other half, can he lead the team to a championship level?, I still think Tennessee does not know any more or less than we did when he was hired. So in reality Tennessee has half of the boxes checked yes and the other half are blank. Two years ago all of the boxes were blank yet a portion of the fan base with no perspective somehow thinks the program is in a worse position now as opposed to then. Vol fans should not be ready to check any boxes “no” just yet. It’s easy start to nitpick every bad guess or decision when you are losing. Everyone has them – e.g. pick one of several by Nick Saban in the LSU game. This shouldn’t be confused with any kind of realistic analysis on a Dooley’s ability to have long-term success in a program. That “first date” that passed gas may end up making a great wife.

True, Dooley has proved he can lay an egg. Again this is not a deal breaker (see Nick Saban – Monroe, Utah). Dooley hasn’t done anything to let you know he can gut out wins with lesser talent (see Brady Hoke, Al Golden). Had he, he may have proven he can win. But the fact that he hasn’t won without talent is not proof he can’t win with it. If the coach can recruit, he won’t have to win without SEC talent. This man will have the talent to compete perhaps as soon as next year.

Vol fans that is what you need to wait for to reserve your judgment.

Everyone knew that this would be the tough year. When we hired Dooley, we knew that he was not our first or even 5th choice for the job. However he was the first viable canidate that wanted the job. That was the position that Kiffen put us into when he left so late in the cycle. UT is a tough place to win. Dooley is recruiting well. All of the talk of getting rid of him will just undermine any progress that he makes with the team. Should some changes be made? yes. I really question the strength of our offensive play calling. Defense is fine, and will keep improving with depth and experience. I am willing to stay the course, with hopefully some new offensive coaching talent added to the mix. However next year is the year for Dooley to show that he is capable of doing the job.

Dooley being fired is inevitable. Putting it off until after next season only delays rebuilding a year. Keeping Dooley is a setback, assuming they can lure someone better in his place. Nothing happened this season to suggest that next year will be an improvement. In addition to losing to a putrid UK team WITH NO QUARTERBACK, the complete absence of a kicking game, and a general regression as the season progressed, it now appears that the players have turned on Dooley! Would UT be worse next year if Dooley is fired? Maybe. Would it be better in the long run to get rid of coach whose results keep getting worse, sooner rather than later? Absolutely.

Florida is as bad this year as they will probably ever be. South Carolina and Georgia are both good, but beatable when UT played them. UT isn't even on the same planet as LSU, Bama, and the Hogs, got taken to OT at home against a 6-6 Vandy team, and then the terrible loss to UK. Yes, they are young. So is Florida, so is Georgia. Arkansas lost an all-American tailback before the season even started, and are in the top ten. Carolina kicked their QB off the team. UGA has suspended about 20 RB's. John Brantley was a complete bust at UF. LSU has had more distractions than anyone in the country. Alabama has a first year starting QB. Vandy is coming off a 2 win season with a first-year head coach. And again, Kentucky doesn't have a healthy QB on the roster. The point is that everyone has excuses, whether they are youth, injuries, bad luck, whatever.

Dooley has regressed and at the bare minimum needs to make some staff changes to at least keep the wolves at bay. As this site said the other day, UT is probably the 11th best team in the league right now, ahead of only Ole Miss. Next year UT will be the 13th best.

Fire Dooley.

John, I'm beyond the point of keeping Dooley for stability reasons. If any of the above is truly the case, there's no stability. How can anyone look at that Kentucky game and see leadership? Calling it a 'needed loss?' Seriously. A 26 year streak playing one of the worst teams in SEC history is a needed loss? As for protecting the brand, the brand is fast becoming an old Western Sizzlin' steakhouse that's now a night club. It's time to quit messing around pull the trigger.

I would break down successful as this:
Minimum 8-4 record and being competitive into the fourth quarter in the majority of games against the big boys on the schedule (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Arkansas . . . or Mississippi State as the case may be.
Beat NC State in Atlanta, beat Florida at home, get an upset of USC or Georgia on the road, beat Missouri and take care of business against Vandy and Kentucky. that would be a 5-3 SEC record (nice upgrade from 1-7) and most likely an 9-3 overall record by winning all the non-conference games.
Too me that seems a little stout for a team that, at times, showed so little maturity/athletiscm/effort this season, so 8-4 would be the mark I would set for showing improvement without having to be drastically better to get there.
I think at a minimum Tennessee has to go 7-5 overall and 3-5 in the SEC for Dooley to get a fourth year. They get there with wins over Missouri, Vandy and Kentucky and winning the nonconference games, but would that be enough?

Mr. Pennington- I agree completely with your opinion above. 2012 was the year I was pointing to from the day he was hired as the measuring year for Dooley's ability, and he has to be given that opportunity to prove (or disprove) himself. I'm curious what you would define as a "successful" 2012 season? In other words, what would the 2012 team have to accomplish in order for Dooley's tenure to continue and to be justified?
