Way back on November 1st, the website SportsByBrooks.com touched off a mini-firestorm across the SEC by tweeting a blind item that said:
“Hearing from multiple sources that high profile SEC coach will quit at end of season b/c of conflicts w/ AD”
The writer went on to say that the quitter wouldn’t be Mark Richt or Houston Nutt who were on the hot seat at the time.
Speculation swirled. Messageboards lit up. Talk radio shows buzzed.
Eventually, the spotlight fell upon South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier. The Ol’ Ball Coach must not be seeing eye to eye with AD Eric Hyman, the theory went.
Well, so much for the theory. And the blind item, for that matter.
Spurrier has been given a two-year contract extension by Hyman and USC this morning. Columbia’s The State reports that there is no raise attached to the extension, as the coach was given a $1 million bump last year. That move boosted his pay to about $2.8 million per year.
Amazingly enough, after just seven seasons, Spurrier is within 11 games of Rex Enright’s school record of 65 wins for a head coach.
As far as that wild dart tossed by SportsByBrooks in November, it’s getting a little late in the game for any other high profile SEC coaches to resign. Guess that’s why folks shouldn’t go believing blind items posted on Twitter.
But if you do…
This SEC football coach was spotted dining at Nobu last week with none other than Lindsay Lohan. When a paparazzo tried to snap their picture, the coach flung his sashimi tacos at him!
