LSU won the 2003 BCS national title by winning the title game, everything according to the rules that all teams agreed to, including USC. USC didn't win anybody's title game. They were voted # 1 in a poll by a majority of sportswriters. USC and LSU didn't agree to acknowledge the AP poll before the season started. Some people, AFTER the season, and only because they felt USC had been screwed, then started saying "split championship." There was no split national championship that year, just like there's not going to be one this year, just like there wasn't a "unified" championship last year.

Yes, I was upset in 2003 because the whole purpose of having every team agree to the BCS is to have one national champion and some people were trying to deny LSU's national champion, who's rules were agreed on before the season.

There is a huge difference between 2003 and this year. This year LSU will have to LOSE the BCS championship game and then have a majority of sportswriters vote they WIN the AP title. (USC won their bowl game in 2003.) In every sport known to man the title game in more important than a regular season game, and especially since LSU won the regular season game 9-6 in OT, it would be nonsensical to give them the AP title. They didn't win the more important title game and they will not have beaten Bama as badly as Bama will have beaten them, even if it's only by 1 point in regulation. Yes, the AP voters may want to stick it to Bama or something like that, but they have agreed to vote for the best team in college football and if they don't even follow their own rules, they would be even more irrelevant than they already are.

If you can re-read the above piece and tell me where I said I want the thing split, I'd be happy to hear it. I think you're reading into things.

As far as the BCS claiming "the hearts and minds of all of america," well, I think you're exaggerating a bit.

I keep asking, but no one will respond to my questions about LSU and Southern Cal splitting the title in 2003. Were you as upset at the AP splitting the title then? Or did you even remember that the title was split?

Facts? If facts were facts we'd have OSU vs. LSU. How anyone can claim one team is better than the other is ridiculous. None have played the same schedule and LSU had a hell of a OOC schedule. Who has Alabama played? In no sport do we have teams of the same division of the same conference play in a "national" championship except college.

The bcs game is the only national championship game we have. Alabama and lsu are the 2 best teams. Rematches have been in every sport including the s e c championship game. The winner of this game will be national champion. Facts are stubborn things.

Nice grammar…… I don't think they capture "the hearts and minds of all of america" because 90% of the people in this country either hate this system or hate this matchup. Your giving Alabama entire mulligan for their season and they have nothing to lose.

John, you try to say that the BCS winner claims the BCS trophy and nothing more. They claim the hearts and minds of all of america as the national champions. I say that’s a little more than just a trophy. Everyone has agreed to this BCS system. You are only right on a technicality, and you know it. And to suggest that sports writers that happened to be happen of the associated press should have just as much weight as the entire bcs is rediculous.

I you leave out a pretty big point though. Historically, the AP and Coaches polls have been widely accepted as determining the "national champion" designation. Since the Coaches poll also crowns its champion the winner of the BCS Championship game, it is both the BCS champion and Coaches poll national champion combined.

BTW, a split title may happen with LSU losing a close one to Alabama. It could also happen if Alabama wins a close one and Oklahoma State blows out Stanford. There are less than 20 votes in the AP poll that separate Alabama and Oklahoma State.

Thanks for making the distinction between the national champ and the winner of the BCS CG. I was of the mind that we needed a four team play off and was actually happy that half of that already occurred (LSU-Bama) so I wasn't pleased that Bama got into the final. Anyway,your point made me feel better about this.thanks

Whiners will whine. If Oregon had won out and gotten to number two do you really think that anybody would be griping about a rematch?

The top four teams in the SEC would have won any other conference out there this side of the NFL, it's fitting that the top two will be flaying for it all.

Go ahead and give the mythical trophy to LSU. They have already earned and won it. The BCSCG is an exhibition game this year. LSU has maintained a 'we'll take all comers' attitude and summarily took on and beat #1 Bama, #2 Oregon, #3 Arkansas and traveling to WVU and trounced the Mountaineers and won the SEC by soundly beating UGA = National Championship fully earned. So sick of the smarmy Bama fans that act like they invented football.

Hats off to you LSU. Well done.
