There were over 60,000 of us fans at the Gator Bowl watching a competitive game between two evenly matched teams, 6-6 Florida and 6-6 Ohio State. We watched the Ohio State band dot the "i". I met some friends I hadn't seen in years. People spent a lot of money in Jacksonville.

If UF goes 6-6 again I'd still like to be able to go to a bowl game. I hope the rule doesn't change. I suspect the other 60,000 at the Gator Bowl would agree.

What if, rather than requiring 7 wins, the NCAA required 6 wins over FBS teams instead? Forget total wins, just make it 6 against FBS schools. That would encourage teams that may be fighting for bowl eligibility to schedule a decent OOC opponent instead of beefing up on an FCS school.

Certainly there are too many bowl games. The more they add bowls, the less I watch. Plus so many schools lose money on this now. Supposedly Texas and Va Tech didn't even sell their allotments. Other schools end up giving the bowls millions to cover income that didn't materialize. So I should agree with this move, but I admit to some self interest here. My Dores went to the Liberty Bowl and we bought all the tickets and had well over 32,000 fans at the game (fwiw, that was the most unbelievable scene I have ever witnessed). Vandy nation has awoken and we all knew that with two more bowl likely schools joining the SEC, we had to show up with fans and money. Listening to the liberty bowl execs afterwards, they were absolutely gushing with Vandy's support. So I admit I am concerned that the timing of going to 7 wins could adversely affect us just as we are moving forward. Hopefully, we will be getting 7 or more wins regularly now, but I am concerned that we would get penalized just as we went 'all in' for the bowl experience. Additionally this will lock in recruiting for the big schools that can say they went to a bowl. The big get bigger. Oh well, Go Dores!

I could see them added a clause saying every 7-5 team has to receive an invite before a 6-6 team could receive an invite. Which the BCS conferences and the bowls would not like because you would have 7-5 Eastern Michigan receiving an invite before a 6-6 MSU or UT. Whom would bring more fans, sell more tickets and turn on more eyeballs on TV. People forget - the bowls are not rewards for a great season. They are businesses that were set up to bring tourists and revenue into town during a typical slow time of year. The only bowl that is set up to reward a great season is the BCS championship game, all the rest are for tourism dollars.

The players and fans enjoy bowl games. Leave it alone. This is the kind of stuff that widens the gap between the haves and have nots in college football. Two extra weeks of practice for a bowl game helps teams develop their players. Going to a bowl game helps with recruiting. Both of those things makes more competitive teams. College football seems hell bent on making its product more and more exclusive and that will ultimately damage a product that's accessible to so many students and fans. For people who do not like 6-6 teams in bowls or find those games boring, just don't watch them. Don't reduce opportunities for players and fans just to do so.

I don't think we will see bowls eliminated. That would be necessary if you make 7 games the minimum. Also would you rather a 6-6 Mississippi State or Vanderbilt in a bowl or the 3 rd or 4th place 7-5 team from the Sun Belt or Wac.

FallsChurchDore...

I wouldn't rule anything out, but it's doubtful the presidents would go down this road... or even be able to pull it off after years of saying a playoff would be too tough on players' bodies. They recently went from 11 games to 12, moving to 13 so soon after the last shift would make them look foolish at best and dishonest at worst.

Never say never, but I don't think a 13-game season is in the offing anytime soon.

Thanks for reading,

John

Could this be a pre-cursor to a 13-game regular season? Everyone's assuming this would imply that only teams who finish 7-5 or better can go bowling...but what if it's 7-6 instead? Put another way, if they go to 13 games, then it's a given that a team will need to win 7 games to go bowling.
