This a disgusting act and does embarass the SEC as a whole. MrSEC never mentioned Auburn in the article. Cecil Netwon Tried to sell him son to Mississippi St. Updyke poisoned trees in an attempt to destroy his rival’s tradition. Those 3 things plus, The arrests of players, the NCAA investigations all give the Conference a black eye. If this was a Group of Ohio St. fans doing this to a Penn St. fan SEC fans would be say typical Big 10 idiots.

Congrats on Auburn’s expertise on concealing it’s cheating machine. The athletic board trustees have put their finest minds on the case and have have successfully outwitted the NCAA. I think the implied message is that it is widely recognized that winning at all costs is the M.O. at at Alabama and Auburn and the integrity of the purpose of the school is secondary to that.

Since you didn’t point out what Cam did wrong, I assume you agree he did nothing wrong. I agree that it was a mess and an embarrassment by association to the SEC and Aubun. However I am sick of Auburn’s name being trashed when Alabama does something wrong. Updyke poisons trees, but it’s a story about how sick Auburn and Alabam fans are. This guy does something stupid and it’s not a story about Alabama and LSU, it’s a story about Alabama, Auburn and LSU. This story is not about Auburn and has nothing to do with Auburn.

@John at MrSEC I understand that people like to say it’s not indicative of the fan base, but there is more than ample evidence that this type of behavior IS condoned by a sizable population of that base. Not only can you clearly see what’s happening in the video, but you also see a host of other Bama fans taking pictures and doing other acts to humiliate this guy before the worst incident happened. Also, while people like to say “Harvey Updyke is not who we are,” they show a different story by seeking out and taking pictures with the guy on Bourbon Street during the evenings preceding the game. Eventually you have to call a spade a spade. I’m not going off of two people with this. I’m going off the MANY others who are condoning this behavior with their actions.

From your comments, I take it you didn’t even read the piece.

If you’re referring to this site as not having a problem with Jefferson’s act, you kinda hit it on the head with the whole “supposedly.” He was released by police who did not have enough evidence to prosecute. We didn’t call for heads in that one — unlike a lot of sites — because it had to play out in the justice system.

Had Jefferson been caught on camera kicking someone in the head, we’d have had a wholly different take.

As for the other people cheering Downing on, we referenced them several times in our story.

Alabama fan Mr. Downing should be punished for his deed and he will have to live with his deed the rest of his life, hope the judge considers this when the time comes.

Where were the LSU guy’s friends during this ? Would the bounty be as high on his head if LSU had won ? Some of the people calling for his head are the same ones that didn’t have a problem with Jefferson (supposedly) kicking a guy in the head during a barroom brawl. It continues to amaze me how we love to kick someone when they are down, and how the situation changes when it moves from your house to someone elses. Also the folks that were present and cheering him on, don’t they have a roll in this and shouldn’t they have to answer for it just like Mr. Downing ?

I didn’t mention Auburn. I mentioned Cam and Cecil Newton who made national news in 2010 for a pay for play scandal. Cleared or not, that image is left in the collective mind of American sports fans.

Well said John. Alcohol played a part on both sides of this issue. I am sure Downing had a few drinks himself. It does excuse his behavior. However it does allow us to think about the bigger picture. Why was it acceptable to anyone to think that it is ok to have sexual dominance over anyone? If that was a girl passed out and a guy was doing that to her do you think it would have been funny. I can promise you that someone would have stepped in to stop it. So what made it funny to some people was the fact it was a guy forcing himself onto another helpless guy. Do I believe Downing should be tried for rape and put on a sexual watch list for the rest of his life as I have seen many people call for – no. However he should face some kind of punishment and forced to volunteer at a women’s crisis center so that he can see what damage this behavior can cause when it is out of control.

Everyone in the video seen laughing or standing by doing nothing should be punished in some form or another.
