Those who are interested in a factual account of the saga of the unraveling of the B12 would do well to steer clear of Trammel and the other BevOU crowd. Other than the occasional recognition that OSU has been a part of the PAC lookyloo fest, you won't get much out of them that represents factual matters regarding conference realignment. TB Picker was NOT one of the first to sound the alarm of the LHN, however Mizzou's Gary Pinkel was, at the conference media convention in Texas, Pinkel all but said it was folly to believe that the LHN would not be a major recruiting tool for Bevo. In light of the fact that Mizzou was the 4th to leave, you will still hear the likes of Picker and Trammel blame Mizzou for starting the mass exodus, the glaring reality of them being the fourth program to leave is more than their biased self interest, can admit.

Wolfman you would do well to understand it was not the inequity that caused teams to leave the 12, it was the instability of control from the Texas and OU aristocracy and their willingness to listen to Larry Scott. When you have conferences making overtures to Bevo and see them responding with interest, it does little to promote stability. Then of course there is the OU last minute flirtation with the PAC that failed in landing them an invitation that only furthered and emphasized the schism that was readily apparent. In what is left of the 12 it is clear who runs the show, and what their agenda is and the lesser conference members are just that, the back shelf voices who have no real voice in the direction or decisions affecting the 12.

For the Trammels of the world to ignore the fact that the second largest fan base and TV market left for the SEC and at the time the 3rd largest, Mizzou (2nd media market)saw fit to follow, is nothing more than willful ignorance of the most intrinsic components of what creates the value of a sports conference to begin with. The best deal in the world means nothing if the future is so vague and uncertain that your conference partners may have all be scattered in the wind in just a few years to come.

While there may be much to learn about the way schools view motivation and interest in the way they align themselves from the saga of the Big 12 disintegration, to understand it you will need to look past the jaded views of the remaining schools who will grasp at air to defend the indefensible.

This is what Loftin, the TAMU president, saw when comparing conferences and affiliating with schools research departments. The schools that had over $200 Million in academic research funding for 2009. All of these schools are ranked in the top 50 public universities (except for Vandy which is on the private list).

Big 12 Texas: 446 million. Iowa State: 217 Million.

SEC: Vandy: 399 Million. TAMU: 543 Million. Florida: 592 Million. Georgia: 332 Million. Tenn-Knoxville: 236 Million. Kentucky: 331 Million. Missouri: 228 Million. LSU: 260 Million. Alabama – 351 Million.

Texas does not share resources with any school that is not within it's network. That is also why you see UT-Dallas, UTSA, UT-HSC, and UT-MD Anderson all above $200 million mark. A&M just has their Galveston branch that is above the $200 million mark in academic research. If you were a university president looking to join a network of universities, would you chose to partner with Iowa St. or the SEC? That was Presidents of Mizzou and A&M choice, and they chose the SEC. The reason why Texas is not interested in joining the SEC is because it does not have to in order to meet the needs of the academic side of the school. Texas is a fantastic school. However the resources that built that academic powerhouse are no longer available to duplicate and build other universities to the level that the Texas Networks of Universities are. A&M knew that in order to grow it had to forge a new path and get out of the shadow of the TU. This is also why that rumors of Clemson and FSU joining the Big12 are bunk. If you think this list looks bad on the B12, you should see what the ACC and B10 look like. Both those conferences outrank the SEC (which is why the B10 was Mizzou's first choice). So when someone talks about how school A could make $5-15 million more a year in this conference, to a university president that looks at the entire school budget and image, that money is pocket change compared to the funding that academic research brings in the school. A lot of that money is tied to research projects that extend across campuses through out the conference. FSU and Clemson would stand to lose 100's of millions of research dollars if they left the ACC. The two most unstable conferences are the two conferences that do not have formal or informal academic partnerships agreements in the conferences; The B12 and the Big East. An academic partnership was one of the agenda items that the OU president wanted created in order to stay in the B12. Remember that the conference affiliation is determined by the guys with the bow ties in the ivory towers and not the AD, boosters and coaches.

When both A&M and Mizzou are growing academically ten years from now and are fully integrated into the SEC, there will be no regrets.

One more thing, it's interesting that this re-alignment happened at time when the Big 12 (-4+2) is going to be so up for grabs next year in football. Missouri and Ta&m might have been favorites to win the Big 12 football race had they stayed. Only Oklahoma didn't seem to have team changing grads/drafts but their team seems to be in flux in some other ways. Kansas is the only team that can be counted out of the Big 12 race next year in football. In the SEC it appears that the East Division will be balanced and the season will be determined by a large number of close games. It should be very interesting. People who write here disrespectfully are not official spokespeople for anyone and show their weak intellect with their attitudes. The subject matter is the two best power rated football conferences in the football world. The difference is a little bit paradox. One wants to have two programs that dominate but lately have lost their edge and the result is wide equality in a pure complete round robin true champion. The other makes a financial effort to let everyone have a fair title shot yet is still dominated by traditional powerhouses for reasons beyond the equal revenue sharing or just coincidence, AND where the 14 team format is beyond a round robin and therefore really two conferences with a bonus game that have a positive or negative result. There are at least 3 coaches in the SEC who seem to be over the top, while the Big 12 really only has one at-all-costs head coach left and he's not getting it done. So next year I have to be a football fan to two different conferences and it should be twice as much fun, as opposed to thinking I have to write hate comments to 23 other programs supporters.

I'll tell you which schools are going to have regrets in conference realignment: TCU and West Virginia. They are about to learn that there is one master in the Big Texass Conference, and it is not located in Oklahoma. That conference is all about instability and distrust. I give it less than five years. Then TCU and WVA will REALLY understand what a big mistake they made. When four of those schools bolt for the Pac Whatever, the remnants will be searching for a home. Maybe the Missouri Valley Conference will take them.

Read Trammel's story and other accounts about the long running and ever more elaborate plan, Texas and Oklahoma had to turn the Big 12 conference in to a World Wrestling Federation act where they had all the media hype and spin and recruits, and everybody else got maybe 5% of the cash each. Even T Boone Pickens (mega wealthy OSU booster) called them out about it. It is not a question of Colorado, Nebraska, A&M, or Missouri missing someone or something. It is a question of slavery or equality. What needs to be understood is that bias will be found in the Big 10, Pac 12, and SEC as well but it appears that the Pac 12 is embracing a broader fair shot at the championship, .....Big 10 ?, well their choice of division names tends to point at an unwillingness to give up the traditional dominators, The SEC talks a good game of equality but the test will be when a decade goes by without Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia winning either division. In a conference where the cards are not stacked this is going to happen at some point. The Big 12 was never going to let Colorado have another championship, and they were so afraid of Pinkel/Missouri that they stole a BCS game from them just to keep them in their place. This was the second time they got undercut at a pivotal place in their history, remember when a ringer transferred from Texas A&M to Kansas and knocked Missouri out of a national championship game that they would have clearly won? Sure the NCAA made Kansas forfeit the game later after the damage was done. This is not a conspiracy theory, In a real atmosphere of equality, when you hire and keep good coaches and recruiters your program stays near the top, but not unbeatable, till you lose him or till the other programs hire/develop someone just as good. If you think it easy to always have the best coaches, then look how hard Tom Osborne and NE have tried to get and keep the best man there and note that this really an elusive goal. Bear Bryant doesn't come along every time, nor Osborne, nor Switzer, and there are lots of tactics that can look like the ultimate system, not just Alabama defense or Big 8 triple option, or the spread or up tempo. Don't panic Oklahoma and Alabama fans, equality is really good for the sport and makes everybody like football even more, and everyone will still respect and love you when you come up a game or two short of a championship.

Texas and Arkansas were both hurt by the rampant cheating in the SWC towards the end, but Texas has had as much success in football in the period since Arkansas left as it had before. Yes, Texas lost a rival when Arkansas left, but Texas had (and still has) OU, That is all that counts. Losing A&M will not even register. Texas could easily continue playing A&M if it wanted to do so. The fact that it won't speaks volumes on how dependant Texas is on A&M. Too bad Arkansas keeps postponing its return game with Texas. We're ready.

Eighteen years after leaving the SWC, one thing hasn't changed, and Nebraska should take heed. "We don't have a rivalry," Broyles said. Not like you had with Texas, anyway. "Oh," he said, smiling, "did we ever."

@jagvocate

Mr Trammel and lots of B12 fans are projecting their thoughts and emotions at Mizzou and A&M fans. I am absolutely sure very few A&M and Mizzou fans feel this way. I know I don't.

Stolen from a psych website, I think this covers it pretty well:

When a person has uncomfortable thoughts or feelings, they may project these onto other people, assigning the thoughts or feelings that they need to repress to a convenient alternative target.

Projection may also happen to obliterate attributes of other people with which we are uncomfortable. We assume that they are like us, and in doing so we allow ourselves to ignore those attributes they have with which we are uncomfortable.

Neurotic projection is perceiving others as operating in ways one unconsciously finds objectionable in yourself.

If Texas didn't miss a beat, it's only because they were over-rated. If you're honest and old enough to remember, then you know that Texas fell on hard times in the early eighties and didn't fully recover until the new millennium. Yea, they were ranked some years, but so is Notre Dame today.

I won't speak for all Arkansas fans, but I, personally, do not "rue the fact" that we don't have one big rival, as we had with Texas. You see, I consider all our SEC opponents to be huge rivals, unlike I did with everyone else in the SWC. Honestly, it's like playing Texas every week. I'll also note that Arkansas fell off the map BEFORE we joined the SEC, around 1989 or so; a few years after Texas fell off the map.

As for the article, I didn't completely agree with it, either, but I think you're wrong about who will miss who the most.

Sort of an idiotic post. OU is by far Texas' biggest rival. Texas is by far A&M's biggest rival. So which school will miss the other the most? Certainly not Texas. When Arkansas was in the SWC they were a much bigger rival than A&M has ever been. When they left, they fell off the map in football. Twenty years later they still rue the fact that they don't have a rival in the SEC. Texas didn't miss a beat. As for Hog fans enjoying finishing ahead of Texas in the polls every year, that has happened exactly 3 times since they left. Texas has finished above Arky 14 times, including 1 MNC and 5 Top 5 finishes. Try again, little one.

Yes, it is true that they are far ahead since the games starte in the 1800s. However, that is a bogus way to look at the rivalry. Texas A&M was an all male military school until the 1970s. If you look a the head to head series since A&M went co-ed and no longer required corps of cadet participation, the series is basically tied. That is a fact and is the right way to view the series over the last 40+ years.

Cant argue about our best season as far as wins go but far from Norms best years. MA did a good job for the most part and I give him praise for his accomplishments while he was at Mizzou but the way he finished the last half of his final season was pretty sad. Should be a blemish on his resume for sure. As far as this year goes, Haith has MAs kids playing better than he ever would have and Haith will more than likely break that wins record in his 1st year. Haith is a very good coach from what I have seen and he has good coaches behind him also.

@jagvocate Barry Trammel is crushed Mizzou is leaving. In fact, Mizzou leaving -- clearly -- devastated the BigXII (and one could agree more so overall than CU, NU and A&M leaving). More so, because OU's drive to get to the Pac12 with UT and the two tag-a-longs OSU and Tech was an utter failure and the last straw for Mizzou. Look at a map. The departure of Missouri leaves the Big XII footprint a striped carcass of its former self. A lonely stretch of schools hugging I-35 until it dumps into Texas. Oh, and there's West Virginia. A great choice since it's closer than option #2, the University of Guam. :) Aside from losing their second most populous state at 6 million, they lost their third largest media market in St. Louis. Barry is tool.but forgive him, because, OU and OSU are wallflowers and UT's b*tches (until Larry Scott gets the expansion itch and they beg to go west to Pac12 again....fourth time is the charm!), While their are some cranky old timers like former bball coach Norm Stewart who long for the Big 8 (not the Big XII), the vast majority of Tiger fans are hapyy about joining the SEC and excited about what the future holds.

@LSMHOG You are delusional, porker. Plus, the SCarolina vs. Missouri comment was especially wacked. Mizzou is 2-0 vs. S. Carolina all-time. In fact,1979, Mizzou whipped the Gamecocks in Birmingham at the Hall of Fame Bowl 24-14 (that was only Carolina's fourth bowl game) and more recently in the I-Bowl in 2005. Mizzou has won more bowl games in their history vs. current SEC teams (7) as Carolina has in all their history (5). My aim is not to diss S. Carolina. It's simply to call out more idiocy that ignores facts. Like actual games, for example.

TEXAS would like to have the Conf USA teams in its conference so they could win again! How do you have a Top 5 recruiting class every year and struggle to be in the Top 5 of the Big 12? BIG 12 is funny also, Its like the guy that always says he has more money or a better job than he has. You still call yourself the BIG 12 when you can't find 12 teams that want to play in your conference. Change your name to the SOUThWEST VIRGINIA CONF! You are right, it will be easier getting wins in the SOUTHEWEST VIRGINA CONF than in the SEC but its also easier to get wins in Division III compared to the SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA CONF, so maybe Tejas should move to Division III.

And that's why we included the word "Now" in the sentence. In 2010 and 2011, Arkansas hasn't worried a whole heckuva lot about Texas.

Thanks for reading,

All the SEC fans see when a Texas fan makess this argument, is as was said, the complete arrogance of the Texas fanbase, which is a reality across that fanbase. It's that same arrogance that is acting like a repellant to so many other fine universities that have had the unfortunate encounters with trying to partner with Texas (Nebraska, A&M, Colorado, Missouri, not to mention those who try to get away like Berry Trammels own OU). No one wants a part of, and everyone regrets being subjected to, what is Texas arrogance, and that arrogance will not lead to more success in the end.

Ha-ha-ha-ha!

Texas fans are consistent in saying that OU is the main rival. Ags say we don't mean it. Our AD tells TAMU that if they leave the Big 12, we're done playing them (and in an aside, notes that Texas and OU would continue to play if in different conferences). TAMU leaves. Texas says we're done.

OU is the main rival. That game is the one with the most hatred and fierce competition (Texas leads the series with TAMU by over a 2:1 margin and has a winning record in the Ags' home stadium). I know the Ags will never believe it, but it's true (directed to the SEC fans).

@LSMHOG Our QB can toss it around a little as well. He really grew as a passer as the season went along. He was in the upper 3rd nationally passing as a first year starter (sophomore) and was 15th in total offensive yards.

As far as Pinkel vs Petrino in the Mighty MO, I could be mistaken but, I think Pinkel is winning approximately 75% of the head-to-heads. We got DGB, Boehm, Richardson, Demien, Ealy, and Lucas. You got Ronnie "I wish I could go back home" Wingo and the pudgy kid from Jeff City. Needless to say, I like our take much better.

A 1/3 of my family are hog graduates and fans. I grew up about an hour from Fayetteville in southern Missouri. Don't take this personally. I am enjoying jawing with you and I cannot wait to go to a game there to take my mom back to here alma mater.

Texas A&M is without a doubt the fiercest rival of Texas. Don't kid me Keith.. I lived in Austin for a few years a whole ago. There is not nearly as much hate toward OU and there is toward A&M. Both schools have 50,000 students and families and relatives are split up in the state of Texas of which school they attend. Both schools are near carbon copies in academic prestige. OU is not in the same ballpark as A&M and Texas academically. You must me a Walmart Texas fan. Aggies and Longhorns work together all the time. There is not nearly the familarity with OU. Sure, the OU games have been exciting the past 10 years, but if you look at the big picture, you are absolutely kidding yourself. This is yet another example of UT fan's amazing arrogance.

I am really looking forward to seeing the Aggies in the SEC. Their fanbase and traditions are second to none. Living in Texas for a years, I was amazed to experience A&M's school spirit in my first visit to Kyle Field. As a neutral Georgia alumn, I was quickly to pick my favorite-the Aggies. The Aggie fan base is truly a gem, I am so happy they are joining the SEC and I can't wait to come down to College Station again for a game. The arrogance from Longhorn fans was ridiculous.

I think the writer is correct that Mizzou and A&M will have some regrets in losing their biggest rivals but it makes it easier when it's their rivals refusing to play any more. I'm hoping Mizzou and A&M will feel at home in the SEC.

Seems like West Virginia may have some regrets. If you look at a map West Virginia doesn't fit in the Big 12. I think that's an unstable fit.

@MIZ 2 the ZOU

Of course they are saying that now, they are winning and Haith is there. He was a .500 coach his entire career before coming to MU, so let's give him a few years to bring his players before you start building any statues in his likeness. As for MA, all he did was bring you the best season your program ever had in terms of wins, and went as far as any other coach has taken you in the big dance.

Good job on DGB. I think that is the first recruit from you own state you have beat us out on since Petrino arrived here. I hope he enjoys blocking for your run first QB ;)

You are making this too easy.

1) Every Missouri fan and most big 12 fans, save tejas and chokelahoma, recognize that the SEC is the best football conference.

2) I don't expect to win it all but, again we are not the prison wife you make us out to be.

3) The cotton bowl was a blip on the radar that is Mizzou's football history. The fact is Arkansas fans are delusional and the cotton bowl is merely an example. Point 1: You crowed for weeks telling us how we were not prepared for the SEC speed. Then, we ran over, around, and through you. Point 2 (more recent): DGB! You said no way he would go to Mizzou because was not on Arkansas's level. Well, we know how that turned out. The 1960 undefeated season, 2010 zero U game, and 2007 kU game are my biggest points of program pride.

4) Joke is on you for Anderson. At the time, I thought it was a loss. However, not anymore. The guy refuses to recruit and can't win a road game. I could not be happier with Haith. Do a little research, our players are openly saying the last staff (Suitcase Mike's) was lazy.
