This whole argument is based on the statistically ignorant assumption that you can make a good assessment to determine the 4 best teams. Both statistics and history strongly say otherwise. Usually, there are very few meaningful pre-bowl games with which to gage the relative strength of conferences. You will know absolutely who is the champion of each conference. Because of this, you have a much more reasonable chance to determine the top 3 or 4 conference champions than top 3 or 4 teams.

You are right on with your comment about picking between teams #2 and #3 in a plus one situation. The SEC needs to hammer home that a top four scenario is the fairest way for any team to make the playoff regardless of conference affiliation. It provides much more access and takes away much more potential controversy.

The whole "playoff" discussion started up again because the SEC had 2 teams in the championship game. But a plus one model does not fix the situation if a team ranked #1 or #2 is left out. That will only allow the possibility of a split poll.
