To demonstrate my nerdiness, I checked further. College Station’s MSA actually is smaller than Gainesville’s as well as Sprinfield’s, which would put it at 10th in the 14 team conference. So, digs on its small size are actually reasonably fair play from everyone but Georgia, Auburn, and Mississippi school fans.

According to Wikipedia the metro is around 200,000, which would be smaller than Nashville, Lexington, Baton Rouge, Columbia and Knoxville, off the top of my head. Probably smaller than Tuscaloosa and Fayetteville’s (I think they are in a combined metro) too. So, between 6th and 8th, I’d guess.

I’ve been to CS and it is a fine town. Several nice bars and great BBQ. I agree with many of the posters below. They fit right in to the other cities that house SEC teams.

@Steve in SETX Lived in CS and G-ville. Both are small college towns, both are full of good folks, and both are actually pretty boring when you subtract out a few bars. Which, is not a bad thing for a college town. Students in that atmosphere tend to focus on the school (which is not the same as focusing on studies, but what the heck, no one said you had to learn).

There’s over 320k people in Lexington and you’d be surprised about the number of bourbon and thoroughbred tourists from around the world. But it isn’t for everyone.

I agree, I loved my 4 years there. It was just big enough to have everything you need, but small enough not to always be in a hurry.

@TheJim I’m not saying Lexington and Oxford aren’t nice places. So are a number of SEC locales. My point is that you would be hard-pressed to find someone to take a vacation to either of those cities if it didn’t relate to the UK or Ole Miss.

@TheJim Can’t disagree with you to much although Lexington and Oxford can be nice places to visit. Starkville is definitely the most appropriately named city in the US. More or less, they all have their own charm if you like a college town atmosphere.

Yeah it is a great college town. It wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the school which is what makes it special. Great place to visit for games, but outside of the University, its just a small town with some good places to eat and good people, nothing special.

I laughed a little, but after I thought about it, that’s not really a dig.

Here’s a list of the cities in the SEC you would definitely go to for something other than the university: Nashville.
Here’s a list of SEC cities you might go to for something other than the university: Baton Rouge & Athens.

Every other SEC city – including Gainesville – has NOTHING going on besides its school. Maybe Muschamp still thinks he’s coaching in Austin.
