Hey John…GREAT idea. I have wanted the bowls to use some type of system for years to pick the teams for years. Your example provides the right amount of detail that “anyone” should be able to see that this would be win win set up. Do you know anyone at ESPN that you can (or have) talk to about this? The would absolutely want to televise something like this…either them or Fox sports/NBC sports channel/ CBS sports channel.

its remind me of my earlier thoughts. How much do corporations pay to sponsor Bowl Games?I know that Tostitos paid $30 million for six years of sponsoring the Fiesta Bowl…but what do companies pay for the lower tier bowls?

I think that this “would be determined by the combined payout of each game” needs this addition: “minus the combines ticket purchase requirement imposed upon the two participating schools”. Otherwise, some bowls would bump up their ticket requirement (# and/or price) just to move up in the pecking order. (Don’t know if that would change the selection order in the above illustration or not.)

I like it. Throw in a new 7-win requirement to get in a bowl game and we have a winner. Some of these small bowls need to go away. I love watching college football, but there shouldn’t be so many bad teams in bowl games.

I have been calling for this for years. If all of the bowls would not sign on, I don’t see why a group of mid level bowls could not get together and for some type of partnership with the conferences to create more interesting match ups. We can dream.

Actually I didn’t see those comments, but obviously we view this one the same way. I’ve mentioned the idea on this site more than once in the last five years, but this is the first time I actually researched all the payouts, structured the draft, and then set out to show what matchups would be possible.

Much, much more appealing than the current postseason menu. Bowls could spend more to move up in the pecking order if they chose to. And without conference ties, the matchups one year might look absolutely nothing like the matchups the next year.

A bowl draft is a great idea and is far better than the system we have now where we often end up with junk games like a 9-3 team playing a 6-6 squad.

Side comment… Can a bowl sign a tie-in agreement with multiple conferences for just a single slot? So, could the Outback Bowl sign and agreement with the Mountain West and Big East and Conf USA to choose just one team from any of those leagues? And then split the money for that spot among all of them for that single spot? That model could help provide some level of access to lesser leagues.

I, for one, like the bowl line-up with conference tie-ins. I like the idea of locking in bowl appearances as long as each team has enough wins to be worthwhile.

And, yeah, 6 isn’t enough. If that gets pushed to 7 things get a bit better, even if a few bowls have to reach deeper to find a team or not have a game.

We just need to shuffle those tie-ins. I’m a Michigan State grad and I’m getting sick of playing an SEC team on NYD at 1pm in central Florida. Seriously, enough of that. I’d imagine SEC fans of teams just below the cusp are getting just as annoyed with it too. We all want to play a Big 12 and Pac-12 teams just as often.

@kyallie The decimal point is in front of the number. So $.912m is understood as $912,000, and $.65m is understood as $650,000. The decimal point is small and I can see how it can be overlooked at a quick glance, though.

None of it is locked down at this point. No one knows which six games will be involved of if any of the other “access” bowls will become “contract” bowls. The Big East and Mountain West want to reach agreements with someone… which would turn an “access” game into a “contract” game in one or both cases.

That’s why I tossed out very generic, quick stuff about the playoff. The focus of this piece was on the idea of a bowl draft.

It is amazing to me how someone hiding behind an alias on a free site feels called to post a nasty comment.

What’s wrong with your life? Why so ANGRY over a story that didn’t even focus on the topic that you’re ranting about? Above is a post about the general playoff structure and how bowls could be selected in a new and different way. I wasn’t going to dive into details about “who’ll win what bowl” or “which bowls will host semifinals more than others.” That would have required a LOT more paragraphs.

That also would have been way off course from my point and it’s the reason I wrote this instead: ”The semifinals will rotate through the same six bowls X amount of times over a 12-year period, depending on the game.”

X amount of times. Depending on the game. Get it?

You’re barking about a topic for another post.

The SEC and Big 12 will still get their money even if the Champions Bowl is a semifinal.I will say, to the original article, wasn’t the plan to have 1 of the semifinals at either the Orange/Rose/Champions on January 1st and the other at an Access Bowl on December 31st?

REALITY CHECK (Q) Why did SEC and Big 12 crate Champions Bowl? (A) To maximize revenue.

It is amazing to me how none of you talking heads have figured out the basic math of this thing called Champions Bowl.

In years when the Champions Bowl hosts a Semi Final game the Media rights are owned by the BCS.

If the Champions Bowl were to host 4 Semi Finals in 12 years the SEC/Big 12 would be voluntarily giving away $320 Million. NOT Going to happen.

The Champions Bowl will NEVER host a semi final game.

The SEC adn Big 12 are in control of their own revenue stream, It is unbelievable to think they will give up $80 Million a year to host a Semi Final. There is no up side for them.

However, if THE SEC/Big 12 partner with 2 or more Bowls (obvious candidates Cotton and Sugar) to rotate The Champions Bowl, it becomes a Win/Win /Win. SEC/Big 12 host no semi finals and therefore keep $80 Million in media rights each year. Bowl Partners (Cotton and Sugar) are free to host Semi Finals in 4 of the 6 years the Champions Bowl is not in town in addition to having 2 years where they will be in the Bowl Pool of non contract bowls.

Net result Arlington and New Orleans will each host 6 Champions Bowls and 4 National Semi Finals. Each will be “Open” Bowls 2 years out of 12. Each will be free to Bid on the National Championship Game. The SEC/Big 12 will earn $960 Million in media rights for the Champions Bowl over 12 years. (Compared to PAC12/Big 10 earning $640 Million in Media Rights over 12 years for the Rose Bowl, with the Rose Bowl hosting 4 National Semi Finals).

Unless the PAC 12/Big 10 come to the realization that they are placing themselves at an economic disadvantage compared to SEC/Big 12 and add a second Bowl to their contract, creating a Rose Bowl rotation equal to the Champions Bowl rotation, then the Rose BOwl out of simple economics will opt to host 4 Semi Finals, costing PAC 12/Big 10 $320 Million over 12 years.
