Comparing school reports, Paige is transferring from a school where less than half the students read at the federal minimum to one where 96% do. Foley has more resources to help struggling students in combination with far fewer struggling students. Is it fair for Paige to get to transfer because he's a star athlete? Don't know, but the two schools do not compare academically. If you're college bound, Foley's a far better environment.

Yes, because Alabama's never been sanctioned, stripped of scholarships, placed on probation, or had wins vacated. The NCAA's always taken care of ol' Bama.

@kyallie

What "much ado?"

A coach said it. It's mentioned here. End of story. Heck, even in the story we said this kind of thing goes on all the time -- from parents angry that their kids never learned to read to high school coaches giving stars oral tests -- good athletes often get help with their grades (which ultimately does them a disservice).

I don't see the "much ado" that's being made about this story. If a coach makes a claim that an FBS coach is steering players from one high school to another because the other school will take care of his grades that is going to be reported.

Thanks for reading,
John

College ball teams are farm teams for the NFL. How many college ball scholarhip players picked the school they went to because it was the best academic institution? Not many. If you are the father of a scholarhip potential, and a coach gives you a road map that says, we have a system that can help your underachieving academic, but over achieving athletic, child get into college (a prerequisite to getting into the farm system), what would you do? And if your answer is not to assess the situation in favor of your son and not pay homage to the illusion that NCAA programs are to help the student, then you can criticize this manuever. Not that it will work, and it could just be hype by the coach, but HS ball players can be recruited by other HS's in Florida and other states, so everybody is getting in the act. I say let the kids go where they have the best chance of success. And since schools are athletic factories for pro athletes, lets let them have more freedom of choice, and not less.

Mike Herndon makes the point in his column that Foley has block scheduling, thus allowing the possiblity of eight credits instead of a maximum of six in Pensacola. If you are trying to become eligible, two extra credits can be huge. I am certain that there is some help and supervision at Foley and that this was part of the deal, but it also makes sense logistically.
